Peter-- in the early 60s, there was a song out in the US called "Deck of Cards". It was by a Los Angeles disc jockey/game show host and producer named Wink Martindale.The gist of this song was that a soldier was looking at cards while in the chapel. His commanding officer chastized him for "playing cards in church". The youg soldier than describes what each of the cards means to him. Hope this is the song you are thinking of.

Dan, I heard the song just last week. The soldier was telling the officer what all the cards meant to him. Each card had a biblical meaning to him. However,I was listening to the words and do not remember if there was a steel guitar on the song. The song is powerful and really grabs your attention...Paul

The original record was by the great T.Texas Tyler I believe. Wink's record was a cover but sold a lot more copies....JH

That song (Deck Of Cards) was also a pretty good hit for Tex Ritter and Bill Anderson! I believe Jimmy Dean did a version, as well. It's a very common recitation (written during WWII), and was likely done by most all singers who specialize in that type of material.

This song has been covered by quite a few artists including T.Texas, Tex Ritter, Bill Anderson, Don Williams, Phil Harris, Wink Martindale and Sgt. Barry Sadler. There were also two covers of it with the title and some word changes in them to reflect the title changes. "The Cowboys Deck Of Cards" by Cowboy Copas and "Vietnam Deck Of Cards" by Red Sovine. Red's version has nice steel playing in the background.

Don't think this is the song being asked about as there is no mention about the 5 of hearts as referred to above.

Like Smiley said, T. Texas Tyler "The man with a million friends" wrote it. He's also responsible for other songs which have been covered by other artists, like Remember Me which Willie Nelson had a good version, however Willie left out a verse.
