Steve Fishell--yes. When I heard him play Wheels with Emmylou Harris of the Opry on that old Fender my hair stood on end.
Jimmie Crawford.
Doug Stock--worked at Church Street Station in Orlando for years.

This brings up a good subject to me. Before any of these guys were "greats" they were road pickers, session players, and and innovative pioneers in our industry. But to say the least they are just the tip of the iceburg. There are monsters lurking everywhere. We don't see the majority of them because they are to busy playing and making a living to travle the country doing jams and seminars. These are the guys that perpetuate the steel industry because they take it to the masses. So my vote for the lesser known greats is the working steel players! People like Roger Blevins and Dean Holman in Branson. Buzz Evans in Vegas. and the list goes on and on...Playing the shows, the bars, the concerts...there's a lot of great players who have to play riffs note for note that Paul, Buddy, Bruce, etc laid down on a song... So here's to the working Steeler!!!!!!!!!My lesser-known great!!!

I believe that Dr. Hugh Jeffreys is the most musically educated, informed and intellectual players of the Steel Guitar. He not only plays the Steel Guitar, but, he is also a composer, conductor,arranger and plays other instruments as well. Dr. Hugh is a real master of music and when I was starting out, he was my mentor and musical role model. Thanks Hugh.

Let's not forget Mike Perlowin!!!! He's the great innovater. The hard work he does to propell the Steel Guitar is greatly appreciated. Al

Well there is a glaring omission from this side of the pond LIONEL WENDLING.
I had him to the studio and he was killer on my Sho-Bud
But also Crowbear just lent me his latest CD and it just blew me away last night.
And I had just listened to BE and Doug J. before that... Up-to-date modern steeling.
Full Time Job is available from the forum.

Another steeler, OK so he is VERY well known, but not as a steeler, and maybe he wasn't the hottest steeler... BUT I still think Jerry Garcia.

Every time I hear Teach Your Children from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young I think,
wow what a great steel part. I even learned the intro on the mandolin this winter.
