Does anybody know what lap steel tuning David Lindley used on the Jackson Browne albums, especially Late for the Sky? I think I recognize an open G (standard Dobro), but I've heard that he may have used open E or a combination of several tunings according to the song.

I believe for that particular album he was using a Rickenbacker B-6 tuned in open E tuning (bass to treble E B E G# B E). He uses several different tunings on his current crop of Weissenborn guitars, but this is the tuning he used to best effect on Jackson Browne's recordings.
Check out his web site for more information and many cool pictures.

Brad,
Thanks for the info. Did you see Lindley at the Fillmore last weekend? I was out of town and couldn't make it.

Years ago, back when he was playing with Jackson Browne, David told me he used three Ricks on stage, tuned to the same relative tuning, but pitched in F, G, and A.
"Running on Empty", for instance, is played in A tuning.
He used Valco instruments in the studio, though. He liked the way the Ricks cut live, and liked the recorded tone of the Valcos. |

Thanks Pete,
Looks like I'm going to have to do some experimenting.

On the Weissenborns, he also makes considerable use of open C, bottom to top: C-G-C-G-C-E. |

Chris,
If two lessons could do that, what would a year's worth have done?
