Heck, I might as well chime in too -- I wouldn't be surprised by an audience booing a kid with weird hair if it were, say, 1962. But, in today's day and age? I'll bet two bits to a doughnut that each of those people who booed had at least one kid at home who had at least one body piercing or who regularly wore all black clothes with black lipstick.

Besides, I would have to say that any reasonable person should be surprised if they DO NOT see at least one dude on the stage letting his freak flag fly

Speaking of unusual appearance - Is the fiddler's hair any worse or different than Alan Jackson wearing jeans with large holes near each knee virtually every time I see him on the tube? What's with that?

Man, did I start something!!! Gregg Galbrith said it pretty good. Obviously, Jerry didn't see the hairdo, he heard the man and his music. Maybe if I had some hair, I might even do my hair that way at least one time, just to see what a 66 year old would look like. Opps, shouldn't have said that, this could start something. Thanks for all of the imput, it was pretty interesting.

I saw just a few minutes of this performance and it was really, r-e-a-l-l-y good. The hair didn't whack me out so much as my son has been in and out of several punk bands over the last 7 or 8 years. He sported pretty much the same look many times. When I was his age, one of my fashion expressions was wearing a puffy shirt, plaid bell bottoms and knee-high, lace-up platform boots. Looked like Hendrix threw up on someone...uh, me.
This fiddle player made a bold statement and Jerry was cool enough to not let it get in the way of the music. Maybe I too should borrow my son's extreme spiking compound and see if I can get a boo or two. What's that saying "some press is better than no press".

Thak you Bobby, I was just personally attacked for my opinion. Steve, all the people you mentioned, Uncle Dave Macon, Roy Acuff, and Bill Monroe (he lived on a farm and stepped over cow poop every day to get to the barn) were Backwoods People. They started the Opry. Bill Monroe would have never approved of the fiddle player's appearance, nor would Mr. Acuff.

I'm sure when he logs on and checks this out he will have a nice warm feeling about the forum.

What I used to like about the steel guitar community is that everyone was friendly and helpful to each other. I sure don't see that in this and many other posts lately. The negativity here is breaking down the system. And its all because someone is picking on an outsider!!! A fiddle player who I'm sure doesn't even know about the forum!! Cmon, if you want to pick on someone, pick on someone in your own community.

My hair's too long and I'm too fat, but it sure doesn't affect my playing ability.

There's some ammo for you!!!

If i could just play the steel on one song or sing one song on the Opry i would spike my hair and paint it my famous COLOR. I thought i'd say that before everyone else does. I only said this to get a smile out of everyone. I dont really care what the guy looked like, It ain't my problem. Lets all get back to practicing, Ha Ha.

NOBODY EVER BOOED JACK GREENE, OR HANK SNOW, ON ACCOUNT OF THEIR HAIR!!! Kevin, I'm sure the "vicious"(note the spelling)attack was supposed to be tongue in cheek.
But weren't Jerry, AND band, great?? I'd watch a whole hour of that!
Kevin, I went to a youth revival at a friend's church a couple of months ago. A kid came in with his hair in spikes, dyed bright PINK. This was a small-town church, in the backwoods South. The kid sat near the front row, see, he'd come to worship, and was welcomed in that church. I'm sure there were comments, just as there were when I was 16 years old, and went to my mother's church with shoulder-length hair. But people have manners---even "backwoods people." I'm through on this one, OK?

I watched the rerun Sunday. I didn't think he looked too bad! I don't think he looked any worse than these young guys that shave their heads. To each his own!

I think any of us who started playing young, has had at least one bad night because we looked a little out there. It's threatening for our parents, as much as it is for an old school audience. I learned this lesson playing Rockabilly at Monroes outside of San Antonio in Helotes back in the day. They used to have bare knuckle fist fighting contests there and you could bring in your own bottle after paying a cover. I looked like a rodeo clown who had joined the Clash. I didn't get booed, but they did make us stop, saying we were too Rock-n-roll. I believe it was during a Hank Williams song.
