Are you sure about that? I know that Tommy White played pedals as well as dobro with the Whites, but if Jerry did, I never seen it.

| No, Jerry never played pedal steel with the Whites, or anybody else. I don't even think he OWNS a pedal steel, but the only pedals he's used onstage, are hooked to his rack, and I don't think he even uses that anymore. |

| This question was posed to JD on his website's bulletin board at www.jerrdouglas.com After much musing by all the curious posters, he finally responded by saying something like he had fooled around with PSG several years ago. He remarked that it was sorta cool that you could play several chords without moving the bar, etc..., but he quickly grew disinterested and continued with dobro and lap steel. Jerry uses pedal-less steel--very tastefully-- on some music with Alison Krauss. NCS product had convinced me I didn't like lap steel; Jerry Douglas taught me different.
Anyway, my question is one of those fantasy "what if" scenarios. |

Yes, Jerry Douglas did play pedals at one time. I remember seeing him on the Nashville Network playing with the Whites on a single 10 ShoBud I believe. It was very basic and nothing flashy. I think he realized that the Dobro was his thing and dropped it after a while. He was by no means a hot pedal man but I believe if he'd kept up with it he might have been.

Jerry played nice commercial type steel. The time I seen him he was playing an LDG and had a great tone. Such an incredible musician and great guy. Corky.

When I heard him play pedal steel with the Whites, I thought to myself "Hmmmm...He ought to stick with the Dobro". There's no doubt in my mind that if he had stayed with it, he'd be an awesome player.
I saw him at a festival a couple of years ago, and he made a somewhat "negative" comment about pedal steel, and the crowd responded in a somewhat negative manner as well. I don't think Bluegrass people think too kindly of pedals! |

Contrary to some popular opinion Jerry Douglas did attempt playing pedal steel with The Whites. It definitely wasnt his thing and not only did he soon give up the pedal steel he shortly after left The Whites. Coincidence? who knows?

Thanks, Randy. Very interesting.
The bit of resentment or hostility (from some posters there) toward pedal steel took me by surprise. I don't recall seeing any anti-Dobro sentiment here. Plenty of banjo hate, but I've always hoped that was mostly funnin'. |

I gottadisagree about "anti-steel" backlash. Any true musician recognizes good music if it's played on a comb and wax paper. Mike Auldridge has said the pedal steel opened all kinds of musical doors for him. I play Dobro and guitar, and am learning(I stress LEARNING!)pedal steel, and appreciate the differences.
And as for Jerry playing steel, why should he? He's the most in-demand studio Dobro player in history, plus his work with Allison Krauss, so he ain't got time, and he don't need the money! |
