Something has either just been released or is about to by Johnny (complilation probably) and from what I understand the credits have been corrected from years gone by. I don't know which songs he played on, but Jim Evans is on some of them. Jim apparently played on several cuts and someone else was listed.

what little steel there is, in his earliest days, is supposedly by bobby stegall and jimmy day, according to the bear family box set.

i have also heard that speedy west is on some of the abbott recordings, but the bear box makes no mention of speedy in the credits.

In addition to the names already mentioned, some of the Mercury stuff has Don Helms on steel. On live shows Johnny sometimes had a guy from the Lousiana Hayride, Sonny Trimble ( or maybe Trammel ), pictures show him playing a Fender Custom with an added knee lever.

Oh yeah, some titles: "Devil Made A Masterpiece", "Train with The Rhumba Beat" ( a killer minor key song ), "You, You, You", "First Train Headin' South ( pre-Columbia version )"S.S. Lureline"
