I just received Jake Hooker's new CD.This album is a text book of how to tastefully compliment a vocalist with the PSG.Dick Overbey is excellent on every cut.I got my disc from Southland Records but you can likely get it through the E.T.Record shop in Fort Worth.The album'stitle----"You Had A Call."

Not only did Dickey play awesome on this album, but he also wrote the title cut "You Had A Call" and he also wrote "Your"s & His. Great songs and all around awesome traditional country music.The break in" Sing A Sad Song" is worth the price of the CD.

Check out Dickie's playing on Johnny Bush's newest CD "Green Snakes". Taste & Tone to da' bone! Also, if you are fortunate enough to get one of the first 3,000 copies of this CD you'll get a bonus CD of a 1962 demo session (9 songs) with Willie Nelson on guitar and Tom Morrell on steel. The recording quality for the bonus CD is not too good but, the cuts are wonderful, as well as being a great piece of honky-tonk history.

I just bought Johnny Bush's "Green Snakes" CD this weekend... What can I say but WOW! Dicky just absolutely knocked me out! Thanks for the tip about Jake Hooker's new CD.. I'll definitely be buying it just to hear Dicky play some more. Does anyone know other CD's that Dicky is on?

This isn't one of those "yeah, I agree, that's a great CD, great playing, etc." posts... I'm telling you, I was absoulutely blown away... This guy is a MONSTER!!!

There's some great playing by the "BIG E" on "Driving Nails in My Coffin" too! Also great steel by Rick Price, Tommy Detamore and Denny Mathis. Hearing Dicky play on "I Wish That I Could Fall In Love Today" is worth the price of the CD. His tone just kills!!!

Dicky, if you're out there, I was moved by your playing on "Green Snakes".

Dave Burr, you're absolutely right about the other steel pickers. What about Denny Mathis' pickin' on "Nobody's Business", "The Truth About You" and "You Don't Have To Be A Baby". What an outstanding non-pedal player he is. He and Tom Morrell can get more out of a non-pedal guitar than most folks get with a slew of pedals and knees. BTW: Denny plays with a great San Antonio band by the name of Two Tons of Steel. Check 'em out if get a chance.

Dicky Overby is one of my all-time heros. I have enjoyed being in his musical shadow for many years, way back in the Darrell McCall days, thru the Milsap gig, and up 'till now. When Ronnie let me go because he wanted to get Dicky back it was ok because I knew it was just the right thing. Dicky called last week to see if I could sub for him when he goes to the OK show. I had some pending things so I couldn't commit, but after I hung up and thought about it, I was relieved in a way. His shoes are unfillable (is that even a word?)

According to the dictionary, probably not. BUT, if you are talking about Dicky…Yea, it works and it is probably true!

Besides, when a player the caliber of Tommy Detamore makes a statement like that, I will always pay attention.

The thing I have always liked about Dicky’s playing is that he is so unique. Dicky doesn’t sound like anybody…but Dicky! He is really one of a kind. A really nice human being, a very funny guy and a pleasure to be around, as well as a guy that all you have to do is look at him play and you know right away that he REALLY loves what he is doing.

I will have to get my hands on a copy of “Green Snakes”. To hear Dicky certainly, but Dave mentioned Buddy Emmons, Rick Price, Tommy Detamore, Tom Morell and Denny Mathis! Wow, now that is a lineup of top-notch talent!

I don’t see how you could possibly go wrong buying that CD (And I haven’t heard it yet!). Johnny Bush has fronted for the best steel players in the world!! Just joking John…

Seriously, I don’t know how this CD could be anything other than great.

Dicky Overby - the name says it all.
One of the most awesome players ever, and he'll be at the Oklahoma Show Memorial Day weekend. He's one of the very few players that can play the Connie Smith ride "I'll Come Running" just like the record. See ya after while Dicky.

Man, what a BUMMER! I just got Johnny's new cd haven't even listened to it yet but it DID NOT come with the bonus cd. I would love to get it, was more looking forward to that than the new release itself. Does anybody know how I can get ahold of it? I have opened the new cd so I don't suppose I'll even be able to return it and find it somewhere else with the bonus.

Dave, I don't know where you got your CD, but you might check the Bush website,www.johnnybush.com.there is also an e-mail address you might write before you order to see if you can get one with the bonus.I know it was limited production but they may still have some. Worth a try.

I finally got my “Green Snakes” CD in the mail yesterday. It is a killer!! I was not fortunate enough to get the extra CD with Tom Morrell, but life goes on (sigh).

The thing that jumped right out at me was that there were 3 steel players on most of the cuts. Granted, only ONE of them was playing steel, but it makes you sit back and think. If you look at the credits, Bobby Flores, a very accomplished steel player in his own right, was playing fiddle, and Randy Reinhard (I would love to know what this guy FORGOT about steel!!), played Piano!

It should say something about Dicky’s playing when steel players of that caliber are content to sit back and play something else, and say “Hey Dicky…YOU play steel on this!”
