Topic: Which DVD burner? |

Looking to begin transfer of VHS to DVD and need good hard and software for this procedure. I'll most likely need a capture card so give me your best experiences and recommendations guys! Cost isn't the biggest factor BTW.

The current DVD drives are dual layer. Plextor is highly rated. Sony is OK but there have been some reports of problems with Sony's and certain CD burning programs. I'm using an NEC and it has worked well, too. Usually, when you buy a new drive, it will come with CD/DVD burning software - usually the "lite" version of Nero or Roxio.
The best CD/DVD burning software suites are either Nero or Roxio. Roxio has just come out with a new version that is aimed at video (DVD) production. Nero is also coming out with a new version but that one seems to be more audio oroiented than video, although it has programs for both.
As far as a capture device, you can get PCI devices or USB devices. I have a DVD Xpress USB connected unit and it works well for capturing Video with the supplied software. |

I am using an Adaptec, usb unit, and am getting some degrading (like when you copy vhs, to vhs tape) when I copy from the dvd that I have made, there is no degrading (dvd, to dvd).
My question, is there a program that will eliminate this, or make the first transfer from vhs, to dvd better? I am using Sonic,My dvd vers. 5.2 that came with the converter.Any help/advise is greatly appreciated. I am using Nero to copy with goodresults.

I haven't had any problems recording the VHS to the hard drive and then burning what is on the hard drive to DVD. The DVD XPress USB interface unit came with video recording and editing software.
I've burned DVD's with both Nero 6 and Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and 7.5 and no problems. |

I have been captureing directly to disc. next time I will try the hard drive then burn. Also talked to the friend that does the video at our church, and we are going to try patching to HD on my laptop, he has a dig. 8 camcorder.I'll let you know how it works out when we do it.

These guys live and breathe CD and DVD drives and discuss them ad infinitum.
Current consensus seems to be in favor of recent models by BenQ, Lite-On, NEC, and Pioneer. All seem to work well in most cases on most hardware. I am personally using a Lite-On 1693 with no problems. About 50 bucks with postage online.
Don't skimp on blank discs. The consensus generally is that Taiyo Yuden discs are at or near the top for most burners and are readily available online. You may find it tough to find them at retail stores. I recently bought 50 for less than 30 bucks.
The dual layer discs are out there, but are still much more expensive--something over 5 bucks apiece I think.
I know nothing about capture cards, but I am sure you can chase down good info online.

Get a combo unit. A VCR/DVD-R player that will record on either tape or disc. Most of them will dub from one to the other.
I have a Sansui. Works fine for about $200 or less on eBay.
