Topic: Spammers after you guys? |

| Everyday anymore I get at least a dozen of these unknown e-mailers in my inbox trying to sell me a different drug for every kind of ailment known to man. The forum is the only place I can think of that they could get my address as I don't make it a habit of giving my e-mail out. Does anybody else here have this trouble? Is there anything I can do about it other than continue to block their messages after they come in? I don't open any attachments but just highlight it and block them from coming back. They never do by the same name but probably have a million names. |

The spammers have software that scans the internet for email addresses on webpages. The software also makes up fake return email addresses so you can't block them all out in a lifetime. They also get your address when you use it to "register" for some online service, such as free ecards or news websites.
I've changed my email address twice because of this, was getting over 100 a day, because my email address was on my website for about 6 years.
Not much you can do now that they have your address, except change your email address. If you have junk-mail filtering with your ISP or email service, you can turn it on.
I opened up an email account at Yahoo for my website and forum addresses. It routes junk mail into a bulk mail folder, but once in a while (only once so far) will put a good email in the bulk folder. I check them as I delete them, but without opening them. This way they don't get onto your computer, either.

I have a hotmail account for my "public" e-mail address. I still get spam in my regular ISP e-mail adddress but it's not a huge amount.
I use the Hotmail address for my e-mail contact on my web page, if I have to register at any site and/or buy anything on line, or if I register software or hardware. |

My experience has been that using an email address that is not provided by an ISP will not work when registering software. I haven't tried Hotmail or Yahoo, however.
We have two different emails, but don't get much spam, for some reason. One or two per day from various prescription drug re-sellers, or some head of state in Africa.

Les, I've been using my Hotmail e-mail address for 8 years, without problems. I've registered both software, and hardware and other home items. Never had a problem using the hotmail e-mail address (it's even listed as my e-mail address on th forum).
There are many people that don't have a PC or internet access and use public access such as a Library and that's all they have, a web based e-mail such as hotmail. |

My e-mail spam totals from 100 to 200 items a day, and I have attributed it to maintaining a website.....and like Jim, this week I am receiving an unusual number of spams from "Germany".No need to change anything because the automatic crawlers will find you anyway.
The most disturbing thing about it is that the spams seem to address first names of people that I receive legitimate e-mails from.

Actually, you can fool the spiders by encoding your email link.

| I get these headers with things like" Jan said to call Eli" or " re: sounds good!". For the most part I have no problems and leave it on 24/7 but now and then it'll load something a lot slower than normal or not at all. I'm not one to brouse the weird websites or go to any chatrooms and buy very little online. I wouldn't do any online banking of any kind these days. I heard that 1 out of every 6 people have experienced identity theft. |

I use a product called Cloudmark. It costs about $3 a month. It is the best spam filter I've found. It basically works on a community type model. Once someone in the community of users labels something spam it becomes spam for everyone else and is filtered. You also get a community rating like Ebay that weights your entry. If you are constantly markting things as spam that someone else un-marks as spam, you get a lower rating and your entry means less.
I've found that it gets rid of about 99% of the spam I've received. |

I use MailWasher. It's free. Open up MW always before opening your email. You can check out who has sent what; preview the context; and either DELETE; BOUNCE; or BLACKLIST. Or allow to go thru. There's also an ALLOW feature for specific things.
Everything is controlled right here. A few extra clicks, perhaps, but saves moocho headaches. |

I don't have a PC, just WebTv, but; lately I get a good bit of ‘Returned Delivery’ which I never sent in the first place. About all I know to do is to delete all unknown senders w/o opening. I'm not sure what good it does. About 1½ to 2-years ago, I had to cancel my subscriber~address and start a new one, because; nearly all of my mail was spam and now it's building again!
