I installed Norton System Works 2000 from a CD Rom and now I can't access my E-Mail. The Message is:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail gte.net', server '127.0.0.1',
Protocol:POP3, port:110, secure(SSL):No, socket Error 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
I have a Pentium 1, My system is Windows 95.
My E-Mail is Outlook Express 5
Can someone help me correct this problem?

Roger I'm sure there will be several that offer up advice. The best I can tell you, out of my long service ( fixing electronic things) carrer is to undo the last thing you did. Un-install the Norton 2000 program. It appears that it is written for WIN2000 and there may be several DLL files that interfere or colide with your WIN 95 program. It would be a recommendation of mine to upgrade your PC to at least WIN 98 second edition and IE6 which is a free download from MS, it brings along Outlook 6 as well.
Take a look at the Norton 2000 HELP file and see what the compatibility issues are.
PC's are gret when they work, not so great when they don't !
good luck

Roger,
Go to your Outlook Express 5 application and open it up. Then go to the TOOLS menu and then scroll down to ACCOUNTS. It will bring up a dialog box with some accounts listed in it. Go ahead and highlight your 'mail gte.net' account and then hit the PROPERTIES button on the right side. This will bring up another dialog box. You should click on the second tab at the top, that is the SERVERS tab. The error that was received was that your POP3 server could not be reached. Make sure the address that is in the POP3 box is the correct address for you ISP. If you are unsure of this address you can usually go to the ISP's website and they have all of that information posted up there. Also check your username and password and make sure they are correct.

I guess I'll just leave all this stuff to Mark in the future. But I do recommend at least upgrading to WIN 98 second edition and getting IE6 from MS. WIN 95 is not a good stable operating system compared to whats available now and there have been many fixes to IE6. Seems like a lot of trouble to go thru after installing a program.
It's a good thing Mark is here as this kind of tech. support is not readily available from anyone, unless you have a credit card handy.
good luck

'127.0.0.1' is a loopback address to localhost (your computer). OE was trying to find the POP server on your own machine. Ain't gonna happen
Also, according to Norton's published minimum requirements, SystemWorks 2000 is compatible with Win95/98. |

Actually when Norton is set up to check your email, it intercedes between your computer and your mail server, and your mail server name will look something like pop.norton.mail.gte.net. I'm at work so I can't look at the exact address.
Since yours is still looking for mail.gte.net, that tells me that Norton hasn't been set up to check email, so I don't think Norton is the culprit. |

Jim,
Huh? Norton checking the mail? Perhaps you meant OE.
Regardless, it still has to access the external POP server. I don't use OE so I can't confirm the error but it still has to pull the hostname (or IP) from the configured net connection in the control panel.
Where do you see it report a modified hostname? |

Set Norton to protect your email account by opening Norton SystemWorks, AntiVirus, Email Status, and select your email account, in this case, YourUserName@mail.gte.net.
In Outlook Express open Tools, Accounts. The General tab will show mail.gte.net, but the Servers tab will now show your incoming mail as pop3.norton.antivirus.
NOTE: Norton DOES NOT set itself up automatically to scan your email. You must follow the steps in the first paragraph to set it up. I use Outlook, but the steps are almost the same. |

Jim,
Okay, now I follow. You're talking about Norton AV, not SystemWorks. Even though Norton integrates the two with a single interface, they're separate products. If you have SystemWorks installed and add NAV, or vice-versa, they show up under the same app. I've got SystemWorks but not NAV and knew that it didn't access a POP server.
That also explains why NAV is modifying the POP settings - to monitor e-mail. Duh.
Thanks for clearing that up. |

Roger open your Outlook Express, go to tools, accounts, hilight your gte account, click properties, then click the tab at the far right that says advanced. If you can tell me what you see there maybe I can help you. Also there could be some other factors involved. |

Hello Jimmy,
This is what I see:
Server Port Numbers
Out Going Mail(SMTP): [25]<--BOX
[] This Server Requires A Secure Connection
(SSL)
Incoming Mail(POP3): [110]
[] This server Requires A Secure Connection
(SSL)
Jimmy I can finally receive mail, but can't send mail. Earlier when I could still send
E-Mail I sent a message to Verizon and received a reply. On the Servers Tab on: POP3 they told me to put(incoming.verizon.net) and on the SMTP server to put (outgoing.verizon.net)
WhenI made the changes I clicked on "Apply".
I called their Tech Support and went through a lot of automated stuff before talking to a REAL Human. Their system was down, so they couldn't help me at the time.
I hope you can help me get this straightened out.
Thanks
Roger Shackelton

Roger,
I have done a little research into your problem. Try this:
On the SERVERS tab of the properties of your email account. Where it says pop3 and you posted 'incoming.verizon.net' try putting '206.46.170.10' (Obviously without the quote's) then for your SMTP server put '206.46.170.8'.
Give that a try and let me know how that works out for you.
Mark

Mark good advice. I did customer support for an ISP for 4 1/2 years. That trick with the ip address definitely works. That trick will also work on incoming mail also but it is iffy sometimes eith some servers wheather that will work or not. I do know that this will work for the outgoing also. |
