Im sure a lot of us would be intersted in a midi device for the steel if something was resonably priced and worked. There have been so many advances in this area for guitar. Using modeling instead of sampling seems to be the right direction. Line six came out with the variax guitar recently and it is killer. Bob Lee says he uses one for acoustic guitar parts so he can tell you something about the sound. Ive heard sound clips from a great player named Brad Miller and it is unreal the tele soundslike one of the best teles you have ever hear, dial up a strat and it is there, on and on, 335s, les pauls, martins. If there is any interest I could find the site, at first they said it would only work with their guitar. Then someone took their guitar apart and had warmouth build them a guitar for it and now I hear they are going to offer just the electronics. My question is what would have to be done to adapt it to the steel. It is not midi the pickup is under the bridge. Al Petty had a 10 string midi picup like the IVL that he used with two midi guitar devices.I wonder if a 10 string pickup could be made and use it with the electronics of two units. Even if you just had 6 strings it would open a lot of possabilites. All of the good sounds they have are guitars. They have a dobro but it did sound kind of week along with the banjo sound then again they were playing from a guitar, but could you imagine have you steel sound like a tele or strat or a martin or use two amps and stack it with your original sound. Or what if they could develope some steel sounds, imagine dialing up a push pull or sho bud or Jerry Bird. Ill post the link for the sound clips I think some of you will be impressed, letme know whawt you think

Actually I am new to steel. I can't even play a song on it but I can play a few licks. I have messed with guitar for 40 years.

I bought a VG8 about 8 years ago and since then a GR ready strat, Godin multi-ac and GR-33. I also am experimenting with the Radio Shack piezo buzzer.

My idea is that someone would need to build a bridge with these piezos in it for a steel. This would cause more tuning problems but great input to a modelling or midi device.

None of the current manufacturers of these even though they charge $250 for parts (just talking piezos)that you can buy at RS for $2 (and they are high)want to build anything for the steel community.

Gibson has a LesPaul that goes by string to midi which may be the technology to look at then you could have 8, 10, 12, 14, 20, 24 strings out.

I think I'll just go back to trying to learn a song on my beautiful Carter D10 and wait for you guys to figure it out.

There was indeed a viable MIDI steel guitar interface produced - the IVL Steelrider , back in the late 80's.
They are no longer made, and are subject to the trials of old age.

there is now a grassroots project (a couple of brave IVL afficionados working in their spare time I believe, not a corporate effort) afoot to at least make retrofit pickups for them, and perhaps even more ambitious ideas:

as far as modeling and the like for steel guitar- the steel market just ain't big enough for the corporations who have the $$ for R&D to even bother with
