| I guess the header says it all. Anybody ever put a JBL in a DeLuxe Reverb, and how did you like it? I'm re-doing one from the ground up, and it has a Celestion in it right now. This will be my main 6-string amp, don't plan on using it for steel much, if at all. Whaddya think?? |

Install the JBL and use it for steel.Unless you have to play really loud.I had a Fender Super with a 15 JBL that was killer at (low)or normal volumes.  Merry Christmas------bb |

I'm guessin' you'll love it!
I have a 50W Seymour Duncan tube amp that sounded pretty good, well sorta OK.
I put a JBL (12") in it and at the volume that I play it at (Most every gig that I do on guitar that's not outdoors) it is GREAT.
Sounds as good as my hot-rodded Twin.
The last CD that we did, everybody thought that I used my Twin for the guitar parts.

The albums Lloyd Green did on Little Darlin and Chart were with a Deluxe with a d-120f JBL. A great recording amp that way for steel but I don't think you would want to use it live though. But for guitar it might be o.k.

Stephen, yes , back in my earliest days we played thru Deluxes's, some we had JBL's in and some we puy EV's in..Great little amps that really rock, especially with those 12" JBLS.
I think a small gig would be right in line with those amps and the JBL's.
I am considering a JBL or an EV for my Hot Rod Deluxe now..Just looking for a deal..

Steve, you will have to get longer studs in the baffle board for the JBL to work, keep that in mind.
My main guitar amp is a 1966 Deluxe (non- reverb) with a D-120F in it! It is great. I have had other Deluxes and Deluxe Reverbs in my shop with Oxfords, etc. They sounded warmer at low volumes than the JBL. When you crank it up, the JBL warms up and takes over! The amp is so much more efficient with the JBL that I can go up against Super Reverbs and Twins without too much problem! I like to play steel through it and the Nashville 400 at the same time, it's a great sound.
Another nice thing to help is the Weber Copper Cap rectifier. It is a solid state unit with proper sagging resistors. Just plug it in the tube socket, checlk your bias and off you go! It takes no heater current, so the power transformer is not worked so hard. I also use NOS RCA 6V6GT tubes in mine. Here is a link to the Weber rectifier:

| I have used and EVM until it finally blew. This was after 22 uears of gigging and moving and other abuses. I really like the sound of EV's. |

| I have heard of others using the EV. Probably a bit warmer tone! The Force 12 by EV would be a great one. I have three in my floor monitors I built. I tried one in the Deluxe when I first got it and it was a great sound. I replaced it with the JBL, so I could put my floor monitor back together! As EV no longer makes musical speakers, you may have a tought time finding one. Also a Peavey 1203-8 would be a nice one to try out in there, too! I have a 1203-4 on the way for an LTD 400 that I am putting in a old Pacer cabinet. I can't wait to try it out and see how it sounds! Tony, I used to have a DeLuxe years ago, I think it's the best guitar amp Fender ever made!

| Most cheaper stamp-frame speakers will fit the studs, unfortunately! You might look at Weber speakers and even give Ted Weber a call. They have some great speaker solutions and he is very helpful! See the link above on the Copper Cap, he makes that, too! |

I made my own plug in solid state rectifier.
Just soldered in some diodes inside an old
broken tube socket. Cost me about 10 cents.
Along with that, I installed two Tung-Sol
5881 output tubes (re-set the bias to about
30 ma on each) and let 'er rip. Oh man....
what a difference! I have an old original
Fender label Jensen C12N in it. I played
through it on that video clip I posted
over on the "Pedal Steel" section. |

I've got a Weber California speaker (Ted Webers take on the JBL from what I gather). Mine has the paper dustcap but you can get one with the aluminum dustcap. Copper Cap rectifier in there too, with NOS Brimar (from England) 6V6s. Sounds mighty fine, and very loud.

I recently put a greyframe JBL D120F in my '69 Princeton Reverb. It is a 2 X 6V6 amp like a deluxe, but only puts out 18 watts, not 22. Anyways it really transformed the amp. It now sounds absolutely incredible. Sound great with a tele clean or overdriven. It is also now a suitable amp for steel at practice volumes. Before, it didn't have the high-end for decent steel tone.
If you like the JBL sound, then you will love it in a deluxe.

Bobby, I DID NOT pay 2 grand for an instrument to play at "low volume." A Tele, on the other hand, is like most of my old girlfriends. Cheap, and easy to turn down

Tony,
My Deluxe Reverb is a reissue. Came with a Jensen speaker. The Weber was a vast improvement (sorry, not a JBL). Those amps also come with really junk tubes and most of the preamp and all power amp tubes should be replaced for a much better sound (in my humble opinion).

I play thru a '68 Deluxe Reverb with an old JBL D-120f orange speaker. Best sounding guitar amp on the planet. A little quiet for live steel gigs but for guitar and low-volume steel and steel recording, it's perfect. Doesn't get any better than the Deluxe/JBL combo.

| I tend to feel that the D120's are little on the bright side. I'm using a Celestian Vintage 30 in my Deluxe Reverb and an EVM12L in my Blues Deluxe. I think both are a better choice because of their smoother frequency response. |
