I have an opportunity to buy a Fender Super Reverb amplifier, a ´70s silverface model, with four 10" original Fender speakers. Right now I´m using a Silverface Twin Reverb, the 135 watt model with two G-125 JBL´s. I love the sound of it, but the weight is killing me. When I picked up the Super, I was surprised because it´s a good deal lighter. I´d like to hear from steel players who have played through both, possibly on stage also, how they compare.

I'm not familiar with the difference in sound between the two, but the Super Reverb is only lighter because it doesn't have JBL's in it. With them it would be even heavier than your Twin. I'd say cut the weight of your Twin by installing a 15" JBL or Black Widow, and/or putting wheels on it or use a hand truck or cart.  |

| I think you might miss the power of your Twin. I had a 70's Super Reverb,which sounded good with a Tele, but it only put out 45 watts. |

Killer amp for playing blues guitar.
I gave mine to my son. Weak for steel.

I have both but the twin sounds best with a stringmaster, the super sounds a little boxy but thats just with a stringmaster otherwise the super sounds very natural and balanced.
It wont get near as much clean volume as your 135 watt twin which I have one of too, those are a monster of an amp. |

Well, thanks guys so far. I tried the Super today at the store with a lap steel and noticed indeed it doesn´t get very loud below about 4 and then starts to distort pretty soon. I wasn´t really thinking of substituting the Twin with it but looking more for a secondary amp for rehearsals etc. Right now I´m using a 210 MusicMan for that purpose that sounds somewhat harsh with the steel.
I saw something else today that´s very interesting, a "Vibrosonic", also a ´70s model, with original 15" JBL. Now that one might make a great steel amp and is much lighter than the Twin. It needs to be fixed, once that is done, I´ll check it out.

| In '63 I bought a new Pre CBS Super Reverb and used it for years. I had a lot of distortion from over driving it and I got rid of it. I found out later that it was not the amp's fault. I had an Edwards light beam that had way too much loss and needed to boost the amp. If I still had it today with the Hilton pedal, I could get some great sound out of it. The four 10s were enough to compensate for a 15". I miss that great amp. |
