I have two of these and I would like to recone them to D-130 cones, one at 8 ohms and one at 4 ohms. I have two projects to build, a Vibroclone out of a 1976 Bandmaster/reverb(copy of a Vibroverb) and a hacked Silverface Twin that I want to set up with a 4 ohm JBL. Anyone ever recone aD-140 to a D-130 and will it be possible? |

Woody is one of the best at reconing JBL's.

Ken..sad to say, there aren't any "D-130" cone kits! The D-series is almost 50 years old now, and any original D-130 cone kits are long gone. The best you can do is to go with a (cheaper) generic cone kit, which will be closest to the original sound. Or...you can use a Peavey or later series JBL kit, such as the K-series. These cones are are tougher and stiffer, so the reliability will be better, but these kits will probably change the sound slightly.
Normally, you can go either way, and still be satisfied with the results. |

I just got back from vacation and checked with Pat Conners at Eagle Works. He recones all my stuff. He can get a generic kit from the same supplier he has used for 20 years. He said he could recone it to a 4 ohm speaker for me! I am building a "Vibroclone" out of 1976 Bandmaster with reverb. I chose the 4 ohm to avoid changing the output transformer. It is my understanding that most 4 ohm speakers are 3 db less efficient than their 8 ohm counterparts. I do not think it will be too significant in this case. |

I also have a D-130 15 ohm that was in my Standel Imperial XV and would love to recone it to 4 ohm. |

Pat Connors at Eagle Works of Portland, Oregon does mine for $80.00, that's a darn good price. If you want, I can hook you up with him. Send me an email and I'll give you his phone #. |
