Stomp Box Reverb

Ok, did some real world playing recently, now I need some opinions & recommendations for a good stomp box reverb. If Boss is the best, then so be it, but I want to get some other ideas on this. No rack mounts; been there, done it, bought the T-shirt, burned it. Looking for a nice, COMPACT unit to get the reverb job done. Thanx, folks!!

I plan on checking out the new Electro Harmonics "Ultimate reverb" stomp box.
I am spoiled by my Lexicon reverb. I am always on the look out for something small I can throw in my pac a seat to replace it. But so far I haven't found anything with the sound.

Alesis makes a micro reverb and Boss makes a great half space rack box.

The only reverb I've used that was under a gazillion dollars that sounded acceptable to me has been the Lexicon stuff and the beat up spring reverb in my Fender Deluxe. With the way things are going I'm sure there are some fantastic little stomp boxes out there.

For my money, the smallest and bestest you're gonna come up with is the Lexicon LXP-1 or LXP-5. The -1 is a dedicated reverb unit and the -5 is a multi-fx box. Both are 1/2 rack space -- will fit in most pac-a-seats -- not a stomp box but not much bigger. John Hughey's used the LXP-1 for years and I think he's got the silky reverb thing pretty well down. They haven't been mfgd for several years, but used boxes are available pretty cheap.

On a tangent:
Does anyone know whether the reverb technology Lexicon touts as the 'industry standard' is the same that's used in the WAAAAY EXPENSIVE gold standard reverbs like the PCM-91 and the MPX-100 or 110? The price difference is only 4 or 5 thousand bucks.
Inquiring minds want to know . . .

If you use the RV-3 for reverb only as I do with a combo amp. try mixing a tad of the amps reverb with the RV-3 and it delivers a warm sound. I use a seperate DD-3 for the delay as it allows me to use the both stomp boxes in dependently.

I can recommend the ART MP-1 digital reverb. It's a little bigger than a stomp box, about 5.5 in. wide and requires its own 100 m.a. transformer. I think they've been out of production for some time but you may find one used. It has 16 different reverb sounds including plate, spring, large hall, brass plate, etc. I use only about two of those. You can set the saturation for more "wet" or more "dry." Total of 2 knobs. I use it with my rack rig in conjunction with a Boss DM2 analog delay. Great tone and very easily tweaked for optimum sound.

I also have a Boss RV-3 reverb/delay. I bought it to use with my PA which works quite well. I just learned about the Lloyd Green/Bobbe Seymour setting for steel and that works well too. I prefer the other combo for the tone of the analog delay and ease of adjustment.

On small gigs I like to use my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for its great reverb, It's used in conjunction with the Boss analog delay andBoss GE7 EQ stomp box. Nice sound!

Oops, correction: the power supply for the ART is a 1000 m.a. (one amp). It goes between the pre-amp and power amp. The other FX are in front of the pre-amp.

BTW, Len, I'm still using the TubeWorks pre-amp and it still sounds great.

Hey Rex, I have tried a Boss REV 3(too digital for me) and went back to my Boss DM3 Delay pedal (it's a delay which will give an effect that is comparable to a verb.) I would also recommend the Electro Harmonix Holy Grail. I doubt anything will match the reverb from a Fender Twin or a Super Reverb, but the aforementioned effects come pretty darn close. Just my 2 cents worth.

Songworks makes a real spring reverb in a stomp box called the Little Lanilei http://www.songworks.com/index1.htm. I'm going to try one out on my new AER 60 since the didgital reverb on that amazing amp is a little thin for my tastes..but boy, what an amp...I put my Evans FET in the basement an use just the Combo 60 now.

Oops, got one more question: On a Nashville 1000, which inputs & outputs should I use with the Boss RV-3: Pre-amp out, power amp in? That's my 1st guess & what I would try 1st. Any other suggestions? Thanx!!

I just used the EH Holy Grail reverb on a gig and I am VERY impressed. I'll report back after a few more gigs with more details. So far it seems pretty great.

Rex,
I suggest that you patch an effects processor into one of the POST EQ PATCH insert points. That way, the eq of the amp will color/affect the tone of the reverb device.

Hey Rex on the RV-3 stomp box.....try these settings for just the reverb.
from left to right.
8-9 o'clock.
11 o'clock
2 o'clock
number 11(all the way over)
I've done 4 master sessions(that's not just recording; that is Major record studio recording; and pays thousands of dollars to me) with my RV-3 so far....and each producer and engineer said that is the best sound they have heard from a steel guitar.....of course I play a ShoBud Pro 2 through a Fender twin.....but they did comment how nice the reverb sounds.

Yep, not so much the gun as it is the gunner. Isn't it amazing how you can walk in, with maybe just one or two processors,play on masters, & sound just as good if not better than the guy who brought in one to two refrigerator size racks full of gear? Thanx for sharing the settings, Ricky!

Rv3 is the way to go. That is as far as I'm concerned. Bobbe talked me into it and I'm glad he did. Bobbe Seymour from that other place that is. By the way check out his forum on his web site.

I've been using the EH Holy Grail reverb for a bit now and like it more and more.
Natural and rich sounding. Quiet, small and cheap. I have used the Boss stuff and it didn't work for me. I found it grainy sounding and the boss stomp boxes affect my tone somehow even when they are turned off. The EH verb is not in the same ballpark as the Lexicon stuff though. The main thing I miss about my MPX500 is the ability to make the early reflections more transparent and those long tails.

But for what it is built for the Holy Grail really does the job. For under a hundred dollars and it comes with its own AC adaptor and a spiffy box.
