Boss RV-3

I just bought a new little gadget to fool around with, trying to get that elusive ultimate sound. With only four little knobs to adjust it seems like an easy task to get a good sound. I have managed so far to get a descent reverb but i am still looking for that fat tone with a little delay that I know is in there somewhere. Any advice on setting it up for ballade type of songs as well as fast picking melodies?

Have a gig coming up early next week. (Would you imagine a country gig on a monday night in Sweden). Any help would be highly appreciated.

I worked on mine for two or three nights and give up and loaned it to a friend about 2 yrs ago. He still has it. I went back to my DM2 Boss delay. I didn't like the reverb or the delay, however I seen Buddy use one at the convention and sounded great. Must have been a user problem.

I like the RV-3 a lot but I am happiest doing either/or--either delay or reverb. The combination settings lack fine-tune ability and I haven't yet found satisfaction there. But I'm still looking. I would suggest using the delay (bank 4, mix, feedback, and delay time around 9-10 o'clock, add salt to taste and stir) and your Session 500 reverb. I paid a few bucks more at Musician's Friend. Yes, it's still around.

BTW--common wisdom is to make sure to get the wall wart power supply. They say this is a battery hog. I've never bothered to find out. I listened to the voices of experience.

So. Has anyone had any luck getting a decent reverb and delay combination? I really like my Lex, but it would be nice to have something a little more portable to take to practice.

I use the deley+reverb settings.
I'm not looking at the unit right now, but FWIW, I use the deley+reverb setting (the knob on the far right) at the 9o'clock position for everything except ballads. I click it up to the 10o'clock setting for ballads. I keep the other knobs at the same settings all the time... the mix is at the 9 o'clock position, feedback at 0, deley time at the 10o'clock position. I here component tolerance on these units is +/- 20% so what you get with these settings may not be what I'm getting.

I use an RV-3 with a DD-2 in a Boss 3 Pedal case with a TU-12H tuner & power supply that powers everything. I use the RV-3 for reverb only and kick in the DD-2 when I want delay. I makes it alot easier and I think it sounds better using the two devises independantly from one another.

I found the best way for me to get a thick sound was to buy 2 RV-3's and have just reverb on one, while having the other one on setting "4" with a very small amount of a quick delay and reverb, so small that you can barely hear it, yet it gives me a fat sound that I've been looking for. It would be: steel to volume pedal to the 2 RV-3's and then to the Nashville 400.

Let's hear it for the DD2 Delay!

I've used mine for over 10 years and can't give it up. Bought a RV-3 the other day and couldn't dial up a sound I liked as well. I'll check out you guys' suggestions for settings.

Question: is the DD2 a "digital" or "analog" effect? I use mine with a ART digital reverb and am happy with the sound. I go back to the spring reverb on my Nash 1000 sometimes, but seem to prefer the ART. I also use an Boss GE-7 graphic EQ stompbox and I find it fattens up the sound just fine, lots of ways to "fine tune."

I've been tempted to try out rack systems and these new compact multi-effects boxes but I really the simplicity of this "stomp-Boss" setup.

Hi John:
The DD-2 is a digital delay! I have several DM-2 analog delays and they soumd good on six string guitar but you are correct about the DD-2 on steel guitar. I also have a DD-3 and sounds good but the DD-2 sounds better. I had a DD-5 and didn't care for that unit. Someone posted a comment on another post and said (did Boss ever make a DD-4?) I wonder why the skipped a digit....hmmmmm?

I use an RV-3 all the time with a Nash 400. I leave the right hand selector set on 4 for reverb and delay, the feedback all the way off. The first and third knobs are usually at 7 to 8 o'clock. Mine is really touchy, you don't have to turn it up very high to get too much echo. I run the reverb on the amp at about 1 too. I also run everything through an ART Tube MP pre-amp. I like the tone I get but sometimes I think that pre-amp distorts a little bit. So I might be changing pre-amps pretty soon. LH
