CMA Fans and ABC TV

I guess at the ripe old age of 42 what they call country just is not for me. Most of what I heard did not do much for me. Don’t get me wrong I like some good old southern rock is great. What I heard tonight has turning point in my life. If this is the movement in country music just count me out. I will readily admit I am no great player and just a beginner in the music scene and learning the steel. It is so sad that really talented people can’t even get a gig that will pay the gas bill to the gig.

I cut my teeth on Wynn Stewart, George J. Webb P. Hank W and Jr. My stepfather was offered a recording contract. Due to his love for mom and me he just could not give up the time away from us. He was our country music star. He never made a dime but gave of his talent at benefits, all my school fund raisers, rest homes and church. He always made sure that as I was growing up there was true country played in our house all the time.

On any Friday or Saturday night in the Texas we have true STARS of country music. OK I’ll add all over the states North, South, East and West at VFW’s and dance halls is were the real music is begin played. They might not look like a movie star or hit every note just right but they do it for the love of the music. To me this is what it’s all about the love of music.

Please help me thank all those great music people who work for mostly free and give us the true taste of country and western music. They may never may have there names up in lights but they are star in the own right. Keep it country. Hope to see and play with ya’ll real soon.

I'm with you. That is not the music I grew up with. I could not understand too much of what they were singing.Sounds like a bunch of noise to me. I turned it off and here I am on the computer. [This message was edited by Jim Blakey on 24 July 2006 at 08:17 PM.]

I got home late and didn't see it all but the last one by Brooks and Dunn was worth the whole night for me. I didn't hear any steel guitar but that was a great song.

CMT causes me ear fatigue. No ebb and flow to a tune, it's just always full blast. Even the Sarah Evans tune never lets up.

CMT is NOT country. Neither is the CMA. Subscibe to XM Satellite Radio and you will hear all the real country you want including our own Ricky davis playing steel.

RFDTV was running an episode of "Nashville on the Road" at the same time as the CMA show. It was pretty neat to flip between the two. Jim Ed Brown,Billy Walker, Jerry Clower and Wendy Holcombe were one hell of a contrast to the stars of today.

I saw about 2 minutes of it and switched. It's just not my kind of music.

Someone has really got to organize a protest against the CMA and CMT. It should be headed by some of the stars who can no longer get their material played on radio like Vince Gill or Patty Loveless. If I get some free time I just might try to organize a protest myself. This sham hijacking of country music really has to be exposed and protested in the media. This is cultural genocide.

Unfortunately I am afraid it's too late to change the direction of commercial country music; however, the bright side is it makes true country fans seek out real country artists such as Dale Watson.

I watched all I could stand last night. I try to stay current with the music trends. I guess the music has passed me by, because I don't get it, nor can I stand it.
The Texas music scene is a reflection of what I saw last night in Nashville. Maybe it's visa-versa. Texas music used to be fairly country. Jerry Jeff, Michael Murphy, Gary P., etc. Now it's dominated by guys with their caps on backward, flailing on a G chord, on a Les Paul or SG run through a Marshall stack. And yet, they're packing the house and the country bands can't draw flies.
Like I said, it's passed me by.

So that's what was on ABC last night. I caught the tail end of it and was glad I didn't get my hopes up. The pretty young blonde lady was singing nice, but no steel on the stage... Time to watch CNN.

In the past year I've been on the forum,I have ranted and raved about the sick state country is in.Sometimes I get a little flack from people that really thinks this %$*& today is country music.That's OK to EVERYONE has a right to their opinion.tell it like it is.There are kids today that would'nt know a REAL country artist if they tripped over him or her,they have had this crap saturating the FM radio and GAC [GREAT AMERICAN CRAP] for the past ten years or so to the point they ACTUALLY BELIEVE that Kenny Chesney,Big and Rich,Cowboy Troy are country,and BO-donk-a -donk is a country song.Most of these young people don't have a clue who the greatest singer of our time is [Dale Watson] because he is ostracized by the music industry[THEY SAY HE'S TOO COUNTRY FOR COUNTRY] Is that absolute ludicrous or what?Bet most of them know who HANK THE THIRD is.When we lose the few greats that are left such as Porter,Little Jimmy,George,Jean Shepard,there will be NO ONE,AND I MEAN NO ONE to feel their shoes.Yes it's ALL about the money,to HELL with the music.I know some one will come back and make the point how many millions these so-called artist make,Al CAPONE made millions also,but he was still a gangster.Maybe if Dale Watson learned to twrill a mike stand,wear a duster,sing flat[doubt if he could do that]trade his tele for a distorted Les Paul,Bury his great steel players so far back in the mix you can't hear them,the Trashville producers would be knocking on his door immediately.I'm sorry but thats my story and I'm sticking to it.BAMA CHARLIE.

I thanks everyone for hearing my part about how bad the CMA special was. I was fair and listened to the whole show to give a fair accessment of what I heard. I also wanted to thank the real country AND western stars that do it for the love of music. I also wanted to state how true country has been moved from our main stream radio stations. I have my XM tuned to Willes Place (formerly Hanks Place). I am not against change but I only heard about 4 real musicains all evening long. I hope we can continue great music that you can hear the instrument and the singer not just a blast of drums, over amped bass and preschool guitar players. One positive point is that I saw about 4 steel guitars but I can not even say I heard one. Thanks again just needed to vent.

I was happy to at least SEE some steel players on there, like Randle Currie on his MSA with Brad Paisley and Wayne Dahl on his Carter with Martina McBride. While it's true that there wasn't a whole lot of steel in the TV mix, what I did hear was tasteful and true. These guys are at the top of their game.

You know its not just country music the pop stuff is so bad (to me) that I want to scream. Another thing I find interesting is the former "Pop Stars" that get play on CMT and GAC alla Bruce Springsteen, Sherly Crow, Michelle Branch et al. If it has any kind of melody, even a bad one, that's the only place it will get played. Other wise it's abunch of guys in baggy clothes waving their arms and jumping around to a bunch of rythmic noise. And I tought Disco in the 70's was a low as it could get.

Chris L, I agree with what you say, unfortunately, I had to turn that mess off because I was on the verge of losing my dinner. There is a line in the classic movie "Citizen Kane," where Orson Wells says "They'll think what I tell them to think!" Kind of the same attitude the record company "powers that be" in Nashville, New York and LA have. Hopefully, there will eventually be a backlash against their arrogance.
