Hey Archie,
Yeah,I guess a bunch of stoned hippies was more exciting than the band,in the director's eyes. He was probably stoned too!

And you think the band wasn't? The crowd doesn't look like a "bunch of stoned hippies" to me. And the director "was probably stoned too".??? Nice shot. Good attitude.
As an ex-director I take offense to that, as well as to your whole attitude. And I have seen a hell of a lot more doped-up and/or drunk musicians - including some well-known and even legendary steel players - than I have show production people.
I wonder how many of all you who think you know exactly what the "problem" is have ever actually directed videotaping a live band? Home-type camcorders don't count.
All you good ol' boys with all the answers can get back to your fun now.

I only wanted to see more of Al.
There is good close-up work on the clip, but being of its time, it's what I'd expect. |

Jim,
I'm wondering if you took offense to anything said in my post? Not sure who your comments are aimed at here.

I’ve played steel for longer that I care to admit and have owned and operated a video production company for several years now. I can’t imagine anyone ever hiring me for another job as the director of a production if I couldn’t get the camera on the right guy at the right time…it would be like sitting up there and forgetting to play your steel ride! Your RIGHT Smiley…just plain stupid. |

Yes, YOU have been playing steel longer than blah blah, etc. so have I. Most other directors HAVEN'T and AREN'T MUSICIANS. That makes a big difference. Is that so hard to understand?
Like I said before, it annoys me too when they can't get the right musician.
I guess the difference here is, I understand why they can't and am not going to judge everyone else as STUPID because they're not as good at something as I or you might be, and I'm also saying they might even know a few things you don't.

These kinds of problems should be resolved during REHEARSAL, time permitting. If, however, mistakes are made during the live performance, the director is the one ultimately responsibile for them, wouldn't you think, Jim? |

Jim, I’m sorry you feel provoked. It is certainly not my intention to make anyone mad and please allow me to apologize if I have done so. I still believe there is a big difference between making a mistake, (which I believe all of us are subject to at times), and flat not knowing what the job is and what most people would consider just plain common sense, which is probably what Smiley was saying to begin with. Regardless, it’s definitely not an important enough subject matter to make enemies over. Been there, done that, and the lesson was… |

Jim,
If you re-read the opening line on my post,I said,"MOST"! Now,as the ol' saying goes,"If the shoe fits,...etc."
You might expect that from a "hometown" tv station but,as Gaylon stated, these are supposed to be the "big boys" in the "big time"! When you're working major network tv shows, whether you're playing music,or directing a show,THE "REHEARSAL" IS OVER!! THIS IS THE "BIG TIME"!!
Granted, the musicians were, most likely "stoned" also back then, but consider the era of the video...late 60's,early 70's?? Wasn't almost EVERYBODY "stoned" back then?

I'm surprised you were able to tell the difference. Perhaps,"been there, done that"??

Well.....I never got a response to my last question so I will assume all is OK. I was stating facts and did not speculate as to why although I do question why.

Gaylon,
When you've been beat, the wise choice is to "put your tail; between your legs,& retreat". The responses here have been pretty obvious.

Its hard to direct a musical production without everyone in the crew unaware of the musical break and instruments. Some of the union shops switch camera-men every 2 hrs,had that happen to me in Atlanta on a Telethon,Whew!! had a guy that knew nothing about a zoom lens trying to operate a camera,(Zooms were rare in the late 50's and early 60's). Audio is also a big problem. Takes skilled personal to produce TV productions.
