Gillian Welch's version of "Hickory Wind" on the
"Return of the Grevious Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons" album is amazing.
Is that a guitar tuned low, or what ? A resonator guitar maybe ? I have purchased the album at least twice. I think the latest version was "borrowed" by my brother.
Edited to include "verbs".

Don't know, John, and the sound clip there doesn't give much to guess on. But just an aside---have you had the pleasure of seeing the episode of the great PBS series "Sessions at W 54th St." based on this album? Emmylou & Chris Hillman hosts a series of collaborations, some like on the album, some with different pairings. Great house band including Greg Leisz on steel. Great session. I didn't know they did a PBS special. I will keep an eye out for it, thanks!
We recently rented the DVD from the Sin City, a tribute to Garm Parsons" concert.
There was some mighty fine steel playing by Al Perkins. Keith Richards did a nice duet of "Love Hurts" with Nora Jones.[This message was edited by John Lockney on 17 September 2005 at 04:30 PM.] |

My band played a "Gram Tribute", about 15 yrs. ago. It was in a Mexican club, in Manhattan, down in the vilage. I've been a follower of Gram and Emmylou, since the beginning. In fact, I remember sitting in my truck, listening to them do a live session at Ultra Sound studio, on Long Island, with Neil Flanz on steel. It was absolutely mesmerizing. But, what I'm getting at is, I'm amazed at the amount of younger people, who are so interested in Gram's life and music. When we did that show, we were the oldest contributers to it. It was humbling to see how many "new" supporters there were. When I was younger, and he was popular at the time, we were considered a definite cult interested in that "West Coast Country Rock" thing. My, how things have changed !!!! |

I saw Gillian Welch on TV last night playing at the Ryman with Nora Jones. She's the real thing, isn't she? What's the guitar player's name that plays lead and sings harmony with her? |

That's David Rawlings. Picking partner and maybe (I really have no idea) life partner. An unusual combination in that they seem professionally inseparable yet he is quite humbly in the background, leaving her in the spotlight. Yes, the real thing and clearly highly esteemed by their peers.

I liked how Nora Jones was willing to have the microphone right in front of her face (facing down) in the Sin City video.
(I've heard facing the mic "down" is optimal for vocals)
It could have been just that "camera 1" was supposed to be on instead of "camera 2" but, I had the impression that the music was her priority.

I went to college with both Dave and Gillian. Two of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.
When they "hit it big" I remember thinking that they deserved it.
Happy Dave (that's what we used to call him)is a really amazing guitar player, and he's a huge part of the Gillian sound, which is kind of funny since he always seems to do his best to remain "transparent". |

Dave Rawlings plays a 1935 Epiphone Olympic, it's a small-body archtop with F-holes. A very cool and different sounding guitar.
I haven't listened to that track in a while, but I think he was using an open tuning on that song. |

I saw Gillian & David live about a year ago in Norfolk, Virginia and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Just the two of them. David played that old Epiphone on everything and Gillian doubled on banjo here and there. I didn't miss not having a band behind them at all. Their harmonies were right on the money and Gillian really has a very unique voice. David's guitar work was really amazing! The sound system was operated flawlessly so you could hear everything with great body and clarity. Another female singer I like listening to is Iris Dement who's really got a unique voice!...JH in Va.

Yeah, this is my idea of great contemporary country music. I first saw Iris Dement at the taping of "The American Music Shop" show over at Vanderbilt, early 90s - she was on with John Hiatt. Man, what a haunting voice.
My band covers some Gillian Welch tunes. College students around here certainly "get it", because it's real.
One thing about these people - I don't think we will ever hear them playing to backup tracks. |

Hi!
Me and my Girlfriend had the privilege of seeing David Rawlings and Gillian Welch at "the Station Inn" in Nashville in april.. Without a doubt the best show I have ever seen!!
We had a table right by the stage, and Emmylou Harris was sitting right beside us at the neighboor table
I also said hello to David and Gillian backstage. They were nice people too..
And I actually won a prize-cd for being longest away from home in the audience too...
Music doesnt get much better than this.. Four mikes, two acoustic guitars, two beautiful voices in perfect harmony and those brilliant songs!

Saw 'em play yesterday at The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. As usual, they put on a great show. Gillian is an incredible songwriter, and an outstanding vocalist. She's also a fine rhythm guitarist.
David is an amazing guitarist and one heckuva harmony singer.
And they just seem like really nice people.
