The Bill Phillips post reminded me of this.
I have an old Gibson Acoustic guitar case that has the name "Carl Phillips" on it. I have no idea who he is and could never find any info on him.
We got the case, when I worked for Little Roy Wiggin's "Music City" music store on lower Broadway in the 71/72 time frame. I don't remember if it was sent to the store from the Grammer Guitar Co factory or if we got it with a used guitar trade in. Little Roy gave me a (used/factory refurbished) Grammer Guitar when I left and I picked out this used case to go with it.
I've still got the Grammer and the case. Just one of those "I wonder who he is" things. |

Update, I received an e-mail that he used to live in the Nashville area but died in late 60's. |

Jack, Carl Phillips did use to live in Nashville and was killed when a tractor fell over on him. I used to pick with him a lot and remember him very well. Some of his recordings were: Big Vine Covered House on Happy Tiger label, Such A Short Time (To Forget So Much)also on Happy Tiger, One And Ten on K-Ark Records and Trapped on K-Ark. He was a great guy. Tragic death. I hope this helps solve the mystery of who he was.

Jack-
Carl Phillips lived in the St. Louis area up until he moved to Nashville, in the mid '60's. I replaced him as the lead singer at a St. Louis club called "The Double Question Mark", probably in '66.
I also rented the house he lived in, which had a small bandstand in the basement. I worked wiyh him some, and jammed in that basement. We had some great times, and he was a great guy, and a hell of a singer.
As to the guitar case, it is my understanding, that the guitar he loved so, was burried with him. Thought that info might interest you.

Thanks guys. I also got that info in an e-mail with another person that worked with hin in the St Louis area.
I guess the mystery is solved. I've wondered who he was ever since I got the guitar case. The only thing I remember about the case, for sure was that we got it in January or Feb of 72 and the handle was missing. I put a handle on it and we put it in "used stock". It fits my Blonde Grammer perfect. If his guitar went with him, maybe it was out of the case or this could have been another one that he had. |
