=========
I've heard a pre-release, not a lot of steel guitar, but a pretty cool mid to late 1960s colletion.
Some standouts are Kenny Vernon, Dennis Payne, Paxton, the Dudes, the Gosdins and Leo of course.
The sleeve notes are bloody awesome and it's a handsome package.

As I work for the Ace distributor in my part of the world, I don't use stores to buy new Ace releases, and I pre-order through work.
So, I'm not sure when exactly when you can pre-order, but the cat number listed with the title should help.

Stephen, I've got a copy of that radio show from 1968 that you posted on the same page as the Buchshots pic. (classic typo for sure)

It's actually a good companion to the Ace/Big Beat CD as Larry Daniels, Dennis Payne and Leo LeBlanc are involved with both.

Stephen, if you look online, there's already a couple of dealers offering pre-order on this.
Any decent record store that will order import should be able to get this disc in stock.

Stephen, I'm glad you got a copy.

Hey, I've got a question regarding the sound file you have on your tribute to Leo and his time in Bakersfield.
The Toy For Tots show, and correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it listed as a 1968 show?

The reason I'm asking is that the 1st Annual show was in 1965, at least according to my sources.
The radio show on the 1968 recording you have says it's the 3rd annual, but surely if it had been held every year, then wouldn't it be the fourth one?
Maybe they skipped a year, do you know at all?

My source on the year 1965 as a starting point was just a brief mention from some source I've long forgotten. So, I'm not 100% sure.

I think the tape was clearly labeled as 1968, I even think the original audio I have (unedited) announces the date as well.

I have audio tape from another Toys for Tots show also that is clearly dated...I'll take a look at those today and report back to you, I might even have 3 years in all...can't remember.

My guess is that the first TFTs show in Bakersfield (of this particular style) was December 1966...just seems more likely to me. I will check the tapes again for clues/evidence. It is possible they skipped a year, maybe I'll be able to verify that.

I have several other tapes from that era, some of which may be the only copies in existance, regardless they are great recordings...particularly the earlier live club recordings.

I've been very busy lately, I really need to spend a couple of weekends listening to these tapes again (all have been digitally archived so at least that's out of the way) and double checking dates/names...after that I will make a CD or two that contains the best of...when that's done I will gladly send you a copy.

P.S.
I also bought the Ace release of Guilbeau & Parson's "Louisiana Rain" recently. The one track that Leo plays on ("Into the Darkness of Your Mind") is something I've never heard, I was surprised by the distinct sound/style of his playing on that. Steel players of that era often sound similar enough that I can hardly tell them apart, even my Dad...not so with this particular session.

In short, I'm VERY surprised and happy with this release and all the more excited about receiving Rebels of Bakersfield in the mail...can't wait

Thankyou Stepehn, perhaps we'll go to email for further discussion.
As Ace have been reissuing the masters from the Paxtom vaults in Bakersfield: Guilbeau & Parsons: Louisiana Rain (CDWIKD 219), Clarence White: Tuff & Stringy - Sessions 1966-68 (CDWIKD 227), the Gosdin Brothers: Sounds Of Goodbye (CDWIKD 235) and of course Bakersfield Rebels (CDWIKD232), Sundazed have latched onto the Buck Owens - Capitol - Blue Book era.

As many here would know, Sundazed have reissued a series of Buck Owens and Don Rich recordings.
They're starting to delve into the Tower records vault and Red Simpson's Capitol albums as well.
Although they haven't released the particular album yet, there is a Dick Curless LP with Leo on steel, maybe two I'd have to check for sure. Sundazed have reissued a Curless set, but it's Tower debut from 1966 which is made up from non-West Coast recordings before he signed to the label.
Peraps in the next year we'll see a reissue of some of Dick's West Coast recordings.
Anyway, I'll do another topic for that altogther.

This is a great CD...I've been listening to it on and off for the past few days...the Rusty Dean tune "Saturday Satan, Sunday Saint" is such a great track...love it.

Thanks for letting me know about these releases Jason, I would have missed them.

P.S.
I have an alternate recording of "Buckshot" that features Leo on the steel, despite my obvious bias ...I think it is a better version...I'll include that on the CD I make for you.

Well, I've been offline for a few weeks and had to revive this a little.
I dunno about 'hate,' but yeah.. I imagine Buck had some issues with Gary Paxton, Buck pretty much had the place wrapped up, then Paxton breezes in.
The only problem for Gary was that he couldn't get most of his product in the stores, and if he did, it generally had little distro power.
The Gosdins LP was the only one he really cracked it with, and they broke up, end of story.

A really good comp. I understand some of the Bakersfield rock bands are going to appear on an upcoming 1960s Ace/Big Beat comp.
Should be interesting.
