Yeah, so I guess by the time he got to Phoenix, he was D.U.I. Lucky he wasn't D.O.A.

I wonder if Tanya Tucker had anything to do with that? Image

Well, Charlie BarleyCorn is still in control on high profile celebs that claim to be clean. It shows they're not super heros after all.

Not a good testimony to what he has professed on national TV etc. All he had to do was not run away and fess up to what he did.

So true Jim.

But then didn't you know that there is nothing wrong with a social drink? "After all Jesus turned water into wine!!"

The fact that all who have done what he did last night; started with a social drink, never seems to cause mankind to wonder.

Man preaches,"we should learn to control our drinking." Yeah right. Just like a kid left alone in a candy store is going to exercise control.

MADD, "mothers against drinking drivers", please take note; it ain't gonna happen. Unless.......you drop the last D.

How many social drinkers will hurt others or kill them and/or their selves this oncoming blessed season? What hath man wrought?

Oh well,

There was a newsclip on TV today showing Glen in his jail cell, smiling and talking to the camera like it was a photo-op.

His hair and face also looked like he just woke up from 2 hours sleep after a 36-hour booze bender in clothes that were dirty before the bender started.

Glen needs another hit record with heavy airplay, fer sure. Idle hands are the devil's playground, eh?

Slightly off the subject, but G.C. recorded an LP called "Basic" in which all the sings were written by a man named Michael Smotherman (I think). As a matter of personal taste, I like this more than he's ever done. I think it is absolutely superb. Alas, the LP did not yeild a hit single and was not one of his best sellers.

Let's be fair, Carl. Yes, it all starts with one drink, but the vast majority can handle the social drink. It is those that cannot control themselves that get into trouble. Yes, I agree that THEY should not drink. The unfortunate fact is THEY don't see it until it's too late. But for most people, it's not a problem. Not everyone drinks for the purpose of getting drunk.

"How many social drinkers will hurt others or kill them and/or their selves this oncoming blessed season?"

Too many. Tragic. Let's pray for them.

"What hath man wrought?"

Only what God, in His sovereignty, knew and planned long before any of us came to being. Those of His elect, will be saved, the rest will fall. Again, we pray.

I don't think a glass of Reisling with our turkey dinner is gonna change the fate that has already been written, do you?

Another slightly off topic thought. G.C. has achieved a level of success that none of us will ever even begin to approach, but apparently it hasn't prevented him from having the same kinds of personal problems that plague so many others. We may envy him his fame and fortune, but somebody once said that success is sweetest to those who haven't atained it.

Those of us who are not rich and famous, but are happy in our personal lives might be happier and better off than these celebraties whose lives are so unstable.

What is a social drink? Why does it have to be alcohol? What purpose is there to drink alcohol if not to get drunk? You can have a social drink with Pepsi, water, juice or any number of things that are non alcoholic. If you don't take the first drink then you can't drink the second ro third or forth...............

Larry, some people like alcoholic drinks for the taste. Wines, beers (especially darker ales and stouts) all have robust flavors that are quite enjoyable. Some stronger concoctions - bourbons, brandies, liqueors - have other qualities. They have flavors tht also effect sinus areas. Some people enjoy that...sorta like having hot mustard on an eggroll. I'm not talking about shots of whiskey. Some alcoholic beverages are sipped slowly. The term social drinking refers to drinking without the intent of getting plowed. A glass of wine with an Italian dinner, a cocktail at a reception. Yes, you can have juice, or Pepsi, or a nice cold beer. Tastes good. Simple.
[This message was edited by Chris Walke on 25 November 2003 at 01:44 PM.]

I am distressed to hear of this. The last time I saw Glen Campbell was at Music Man's
sales office and he told Leo Fender and Tom Walker that he had turned to religion and let
the devil within him go and I could see in his eyes the look of peace within.

He seemed very sincere and gentlemanly. His past history was that he was quite a heavy drinker which led to his not being called for sessions etc.

These things can happen to anyone and I dont think he is beyond cure.

He slipped off his commitment to being a born
again and made a mistake..Easy for those who
are as popular as Glen "is was" to be under his own pressure whatever that may have been.
His being scrutinized is because of who he is
All things considered, he was very kind and accomodating when I worked as a liason between artists and music retail stores.

I am hoping he will resolve his problem and go on with his life. I dont like to kick someone when they are down.

None of us are perfect are we??? Just because I am is besides the point.

How it works:

What I do is try and stay away from "never gonna do it again" and just know I'll get through TODAY.

It's worked for 24 years..

The first 12 or so of them I went and met with people of all races creeds and religions EVERY DAY that had a similar physiological intolerance.

I'd have to say that most of the people I met there never made it. They just coudn't "grasp and develop a manner of living which demanded rigorous honesty", far as I could tell..

Another problem I've noted is the confusion of too many "religious" aspects with a physiological intolerance. Some of the people I met in those first twelve years, in those daily meetings, that recovered, and went on to lead productive alcohol free lives were Born again Christians. Some Were Athiests or Agnostics. Some were Buddhists. A couple, like myself, were backsliding Lutherans. In my country people are free to believe what they wish. In my world it is similar.

Are different believing people "Going to Hell"? I don't know. I know I'm not.

My soul is saved whether I drank or drink myself to death or not. We all die from some self induced cause in some way or other. It's called Mortality. Maybe "Original Sin"..

Not drinking is the best way for people with physiolgical intolerance to COOH to keep "Hell" from happening on Earth. Their Gods will "Sort them Out" later I reckon..

It's closer to diabetes than hepatitis. Some people can drink heavily their whole lives and never become intolerant. Some are from birth, some like myself become so at age 25. Some religious sects seem to think that diabetes (or hepatitis) can be "prayed away", or that it is the result of these people "choosing to eat too much sugar".

God, as I picured him on the big throne with the flowing robes and crown was my best drinking buddy.. So was his kid. Alcoholism, like diabetes might be better looked at as a "condition" and go on from there.

I hope he connects with other people that have had his type of trials, and a similar physiological intolerance. It takes a while sometimes.

Maybe he just decided that he could drink socially again..

I guess we'll have to ask him.

Nobody can refuse to try and drink moderately until they convince themselves that they can't. You have to remove the shadow of doubt from your OWN mind. No one elses.

It was much easier when I realised that rather then develop "Self Control" it only required my admitting to myself that I had none when it came to drinking that depressant.

I became a believer 24 years ago. Nothing I or anybody else could do has nor will ever change my mind. Certainly nothing anybody could type.

I'd say "Your Results May Vary" but in this case, if you are Physiologically Intolerant of Alcohol....

They simply won't.

Sorry.

Bravo Eric!

Glen messed up.

He publicly professed his Christianity--he did not publicly profess that he would never mess up again.

The media will be all over him for a day and then that will be over. Haven't we already forgotten about that Judd lady?

In regards to his playing--I saw him on a show with George Benson. Glen was all over him playing Georges' licks back at him and not even taking a back seat to one of the Jazz worlds' greatest players. On a Strat no less!

I'll take "Wichita Lineman" as my fav. He should have sang that while in the slammer.

The sad truth is, fellas, that when you're an addict you're never really out of the woods.

It really is a disease, and I'm very sorry for Glen. I believe he honestly wants to be a better man than that.

If you're a believer, I hope that you'll join me in praying for him, as well as all those who have the monkey on their back.

Rick

It's sad to see anyone with so much talent end up this way. I hope he gets the help he so obviously needs. I saw that show with Benson. Campbell is or was as fine a guitar picker as you could ask for. He put Ovation on the map almost singlehandedly when they started to move from manufacturing hi-tech flight components to guitars with synthetic backs and sides.

I sure hated to see Glen on the news this morning. He will probably get a slap on the wrist out of this episode. The good news is he did not hit and kill anyone so he will not serve a long jail sentence.

Totally off the subject of GC, but on the subject of AA, we had a drummer in our band that had an alcholic father. After a long time of trying to persuade his father to go to a AA meeting, his father agreed to go if his son would accompany him. Lo and behold, at the AA meeting his father ran into an old drinking buddy that he hadn't seen for years. They split from the meeting and went to a bar to catch up on some past due drinking. Our drummer never mentioned it again to his father about AA. I always thought this was a rather funny story.

I have an album from the 60s he did and one of the songs is one we associate to Curly Chalker, "The Long Black Limousine" and it was a real tear jerker but pretty good.

I think Cambell has one more big hit in him. I bet if he was able to get one on country radio it would blow doors off. He's a producer's dream.
