I think the infection of country music by pop music can and rightly should be traced back to what Chet Atkins and Owen Bradley did back in the late 50's.... creating the famed (or should that be in infamy) "Nashville sound" (or Countrypolitan). However, should Chet be revered any less for this? No not really. Chet was doing a JOB and doing it well. The object (as it still is today) is for the record company to make money and Atkins and Bradley did their jobs well in that aspect.
But like it or not, this is a part of Chet's history and it is a part of country's history. And I don't think it disrespectful to discuss it in a tactful, rational manner.
I suspect once the birth of rock and roll happened (and since it made lots of $$$ for the record companies) there wasn't any way for country to remain "pure" and still make enough $$$ to satisfy the heads of the labels. Look how stale country had become from the last gasps of the "Urban Cowdung" fad until Garth's breakthrough (with the exception of the debuts and breakthroughs of George Strait, Ricky Skaggs, Randy Travis, Dwight Yoakam and Ricky Van Shelton aka the "New Traditionalist" movement). It's funny though..... that early 80's stuff sounds pretty "Yee HAW" compared to the "pop country" of the late 90's to today.
