I've just been digging through some old cassettes that I recorded back in the early to mid 80's, and came across this tune. Kinda sounds like Johnny lee, but I'm not sure. Anyone know for sure who sang it? Also, who played steel on it? Great sounding stuff! I'd sure appreciate any help finding out. Thanks.
Yeah...I used to play it years ago around Seattle area...Michael Murphy penned the
tune, and it was featured in that big blockbuster, that probably kicked off 'yuppie country music', "URBAN COWBOY".
Johnny Lee, indeed, had a hit with it.
Actually, Michael Murphey wrote and recorded the original version in 1976 (I played steel on that version).
Johnny Lee had the cover that was the bigger hit from the "Urban Cowboy" soundtrack, produced by John Boylan, and Steve gets the prize--Sneeky Pete on steel.
I have a 45 record of Johnny Lee singing
Cherokee Fiddle recorded at Gilley's Recording Studio in Pasadena, Tx. The steel
player on this record is Bob Tuttle. I believe this recording was done before the Urban Cowboy cut.
