Pedal Steel is not an easy instrument. If you play easy licks all the time, it wont sound good, even if you have 11 licks

I recommend you go for the real stuff (plenty here) and prepare yourself for some hard work. Hope this helps.

Andy, in my opinion, you cannot learn the instrument properly from the few little titbits given to you. This way you will be searching for years, like we did in the old days. And you will be playing parrot-like licks, and not the music.

If you want to quickly learn to play the PSG properly, I recommend you buy one of the excellent courses available from the pros. Jeff, Doug, etc. etc. And then practice and practice... No need to get stuck...

(I run an Animation School and a lot of people join us realising they have been computer operators for years. When we turn them into animators they are grateful forever. They never realised before that there was a difference.)

Learning tip:
Learn all your licks in different keys and understand why they work musically.

That's a very useful lick, Dayton.
I play it that way sometimes, as well, but there's a little twist that may make it easier to play faster. As you probably know, this style lick -- esp in the minor form -- is a rock 'n' roll cliche -- usually played very fast. On another thread, we were discussing the combination of bar movement, pedal slurs, and picking patterns. Rather than sticking to one fret position, this example moves around a bit more in the interest of playability. See what you think . . .

Jeff Newman's "Up from the Top" is a sure way of learning easy E9th licks and you can also build other licks around these fills. Jeff's video is great too since he is in a relaxed, having fun, type of mood. Every nickel spent on Jeff's material is worth it.

Studying his "Woodshed" series is another way of learning some more difficult fills, but if you really look close, there's a lot of similiarity in the "Up from the Top" stuff, too.
