pickup suggestions for DIY lap steel build

Post by Leanne Douglas »

Hi Everyone, I'm fairly new here. I have become addicted to lap steel, and have bought a project for myself. I've purchased a DIY double neck lap steel kit from Cozart. I know I am going to have to upgrade some things on it. One side will be open E with Certano benders. The other side will be E6. I have to stick with that because my brain is cemented in the normal guitar E tuning up and down the fretboard. I have been looking at the different pickups that might work for me and the guitar and am very confused. I don't want too shrill or too bright sound. I want a warm sound. Like Troy has on his Deusenberg, and Luke Cyrus has on his. I'm a "clean" player....no dirt. Humbuckers won't fit what's routed out for single coils. I know I can have someone modify that space to fit what I get. I would appreciate any suggestions and links to possible choices.

Hi Leanne,

I just built a lap steel recently and used the Seymour Duncan 'Hot for Tele' pickups. They are great! https://youtu.be/_4wT47G_hi0

Have you finished this project? Would love to hear how it ended up.

Gemini suprocaster is a pretty great pickup that I've used in a few guitars that might get you about where you're hoping.
