Trying to Identify the Builder

Post by Ben Pedigo »

My son and I purchased this Uni-12 from a musician in Paris, Kentucky.
It looks like an early 70's build based on the Grover tuning pegs but
not sure. Whoever built was a good machinist/craftsman. Thank you
all for your guidance.

The cabinet has some similarities to Doug Baggett instruments posted on this forum but I have been told that Doug only used wood for his
builds. Another name that came up was Curt Olsen but I have never seen one of his guitars.

This is my SWAG.
It looks to be a well constructed guitar.
Whoever built it, Was quite a craftsman, And had access to some good equipment, Drill Press, Milling Machine and Lathe. And a good supply of raw materials.
The fret board is hand made and covered with plexiglass. Has bolts through the legs to attach pedal board. Dates it to about 1970. The eagle on the pedal board looks like the USA Eagle with olive branch in 1 foot , Arrows in other.
Looks like it may be, What we called a Government Project when I worked in machine shops. A 1 of a kind guitar.

Bobby- Thank you for your help. You are right- someone with good machining skills. It
has been very helpful for me to set this up. I am understanding the mechanics. I put
the pedals on an Emmons arrangement and set the knees like I have been reading
about in the Forum.

This pedal steel looks similar to a Doug Baggett build to me but I believe Doug only
used all wood cabinets. The other name that has come up as a potential builder is
Curt Olsen but I have never seen an Olsen build.

I used this steel last year on about 20 shows and had a great time. I wish I had started
to play at 21 instead of 71 but at least I am in now.
