Is 1500 on this Beck a good deal?

Post by Garrett Johnston »

Driving to pick it up this week! This will be my first steel and probably only one for a while. Wanna ask yall if this is a good deal. People seem to speak of this community fondly so I trust you!

Yes, a good price on a solid guitar. It's probably going to need some setup help, the lowers on strings 4 & 8 are over-tuned, possibly others and perhaps on the raise side too, which can lead to much tail chasing.

It's an easy fix, this sticky thread explains what that means and how to correct it: viewtopic.php?t=326460

Well I might be coming here on guidance on how to do it! I’m pretty handy and I may as well learn how to maintain it myself!

I don't want to be the bad news guy but finger 5 looks suspicious. I purchased a used BMI with a similar look from a forum member and had to rebuild the changer. The axle is 1/8 drill rod and it was bent and rusted. Several fingers were frozen and crusty. I soaked the fingers in mineral spirits and brush cleaned them, replaced the axle and replaced the return springs. These are solid good steels and if maintained will last a lifetime. The company is still in business and parts available. However I got what I needed from McMaster Carr.
All those lower fingers should be fully back against the stop too.

Hi Garret. I owned one of these. On your left knee lever, pushed to the right, it appears you are missing a bell crank. The bell cranks connect under the cross bar. That is how that lever gets it's reversing action. Some one here on the forum should have one, with the connecting screw, for you. That is a decent deal. Good luck...Ron
