Jeremy Wakefield Tuning-Sands Of Time

Post by Dan Brooks »

Does anyone happen to know...or can you ascertain...what tuning Jeremy Wakefield is using on the Wayne Hancock song "Sands of Time" from his A-Town Blues album? I'd love to try and work out some of his playing on the song, but I'm really new at the 8-string non-pedal and I can't determine the tuning by listening. Thanks!

Hiya Dan-
Pretty sure I was just on a standard C6 with G on top; GECAGECA. I may have had some variation on the lowest string but was not using it on that tune... hope that's helpful!

Jeremy…Can’t thank you enough for responding to my question! Aside from the non-pedal legends of the golden age of country music, you and Chris Scruggs are my absolute favorites. After nearly 50 years of playing dobro I acquired a ‘54 Fender Dual 8 about a year ago. It’s quite the challenge but I’m enjoying every minute of trying to figure it out. Again, many thanks for taking the time to answer my question. And please keep up your wonderful work! I’ll be listening.

PS- I listened to your interview on "The Steel Guitar Podcast" a couple days ago. Very informative and super enjoyable!

You're most welcome Dan, thank you for such kind words- I'm honored to be mentioned in the same sentence with Chris Scruggs- he's a hero of mine as well. Best of luck on this journey! :)

Hi Jeremy-
Can you recommend string gauges for this this tuning? Mainly, the high G for a long scale Stringmaster. Would a .014 have too much tension and break, do you think?

Thanks!

That does sound like it would break- I don't have experience with 26" (?) scale but maybe more like .011 or .012...

Sorry, should have specified 24.5". Thanks, I'll start with those and go up as needed.
