Pauline - Joaquin Murphey tune -C6th lap steel

Post by Andy Volk »

Joaquin Murphey's tune "Pauline" is one I've been wanting to figure out for a long time. JM played it on pedal steel C6 with a high G string and a re-entrant B string on the bottom. I wanted to use the standard 6-string C6 so my arrangement is an interpretation, not an exact transcription.

Joaquin's original recording (starts at 3:50): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8GH_-9i_CE

Computer audio of my arrangement at volkmediabooks

Perhaps I'm late to the party, but I couldn't find your recording on that url (big fan of Joaquin . . . and you).

Thanks, Susan! I'm awed by your playing and overall musicality. Big fan of yours. URL fixed above.

I need to re-vamp the site but because the software has undergone so many changes since I first built the site, I need to re-create it from scratch and have been dragging my heels on that. The single arrangements are now on 2 pages.

Really nice!!! It makes me want to play 8 string nonpedal.

I liked how you paired the computer version with the original recording. Is that you playing along with the computer or is the computer doing it? Sometimes I think it's you, and then other times I think it's the computer, though the chimes at the end sounded natural.

Thanks, Susan. These days, it's usually the computer because I've put so much time and energy into arranging these last few years that my skills on the instrument are frankly, a bit behind. I also do so many arrangements that finding time for learning them to performance level plus getting excellent recordings is just not in my wheelhouse. Guitar Pro's playback software still struggles to get truly in the steel guitar sonic ballpark but, I feel that most of my arrangements are just a blueprint for creativity, so the computer output gives enough of the intent and rhythms and feel to do the job. My Soundcloud postings are usually of my playing.

Very nice Andy. Pauline was the love of his life. As you know I recorded Joaquin playing that tune and it would mean a lot to him that someone liked it enough to figure it out and write out an arrangement. BTW, to cop some of Murph's voicings, it might help to tune your low C to C#.

The steel world owes you and Chas a debt we can't pay for what you guys did for Joaquin the musician and Joaquin the man. I love that CD.
