Steel guitar for sale question

Post by Wayne Baker »

As someone who has tried to sell, I get overwhelmed/lost, I lose track of those wanting to buy, as well as technology has surpassed my ability, is there someone or some company that would do a consignment type sale, take responsibility for keeping up with the buyers for a fee, etc...

Thank you in advance,

Wayne Baker

Talk to your local guitar store about consignment, they will want a cut of the sale but will handle everything for you.

If you're going with a local music store (or an independent agent for that matter) make sure you have a contract that specifically calls out the amount (% of the total sale or specific dollars) that you'll receive from the sale.

Also, the contract should clearly state who will pay for shipping & insurance and who will be responsible if the instrument arrives damaged by the shipper (or doesn't arrive at all).

I bring this up as I got screwed by my big local music store consigning several synthesizers last year. The store told me I'd get 70% of the sale price. Unfortunately, the consignment contract didn't specifically define that in writing. I called them and brought that up and they said that was ok, that 70% on consignments has been their standard practice for many years so I went with it.

As it turned out, they sold all my synths on their reverb.com storefront rather than in the physical store and took the reverb.com seller fees out of MY proceeds without telling me beforehand dropping my payout to around 60%. Since the consignment contract didn't mention the specific % I'd receive, I had no way to fight it. This ended up costing me $100's of dollars. When I realized this, I had the last (and most expensive) synth still on consignment with them so brought it home and vowed never to deal with them again.

It's not so much that they passed the reverb.com fees on to me (which I've heard isn't unusual), it's that they did it without telling me and tried to sneak it past me :x

I think that if you look thru the 4-Sale listings on here, there are a few resellers which are quite active on here. I would like to think that they would be able to help you for a commission.

Sale

Post by Wayne Baker »

Oh, thank you all. I tried a couple times to sell and ended up making a huge mess of the whole thing, getting confused on the order of who was first, between messages and email I really got overwhelmed. I was really disgusted with not being able to do a sale in an organized manner. The last thing I want is to be do someone wrong with something like this. Thank you for the help. I've had a couple people contact me through pm too.
Thanks,

Wayne, we have such a music store in the Spokane Washington area. Store front selling music supplies and guitars, even steels, cords and such, but the guy also will take musical instruments on consign and place them on the internet, usually I bet on ebay. I would search around your area to see if you have such a store and ask if they would post to the forum here.
