Nut Raiser

Post by Ken Pippus »

Everybody has seen the metal “channel” placed over the nut to allow lap style playing on a conventional guitar. I need the same thing to fit a Fender Jazz Bass. I would get a tall nut, but the current one is very short and the fretboard channel is so narrow I think the leverage of string tension would likely break it out of the fretboard.

Clever ideas? Anyone want to get paid to build me one?

Here’s my idea from a newby to Dobro. I have that channel over my nut but thought, could you carve a new nut with a foot so the string force can’t tip the nut forward?

That’s a good thought, and an interesting approach. I might have thought the “foot” should go on the nut side or, perhaps ideally, both.

A big shoutout to Tom Engleman, who has a prototype coming my way after much thought, correspondence, and effort on his part. And a Canadian mail strike. Will post a picture when running.

Thanks, Tom!
