Whew! Astonishing! Doug blew my 11 year old mind first time I heard him in 1971 and still does today. 🤗

I was fortunate to spend a week 'one on one' with Doug in the early 80's, and still refer to the subject matter he shared with me.

What a 'heaven-sent talent'......with gobs of humility - I've never met another person like him.

PS -Try looping (and keeping) your ring finger around the first string and then picking those deep strings.....my hand doesn't stretch that far!

Goes to show yes you can play anything, and super cleanly with style and grace......if you're Doug Jernigan.

I heard him 1st on the old Hillbilly Jazz album with Vassar and Bromberg. Still have it.

That album was also my introduction to Doug. Blew me away back then and still does...

Seen Doug at a couple Steel Guitar shows, The man has an unbelievable right hand. He played one song, He jumped from E9th to C6th back and forth. Never missed a string on either neck.

Bonnie Marie. I've seen him do it several times at the conventions. Shortly after I started playing, I learned of Doug's playing and bought a couple of his LPs and worked up a few of the tunes he played. Stompin' at the Savoy, Doug's Melody, Pride, All the Things You Are. I can't play fast enough to cover his uptempo stuff but I sure admire it.

I think this was the first time I ever heard Stompin' and Things and it really got me as I was just starting listening to swing, big band and jazz.

I just now realized what an inspiration he was in my early years and remains so today.

Great video here. Thanks Larry.

I just saw this video yesterday.

I know what Doug can do, yet this came as a revelation!!! IS there a more accomplished player out there today?

It occurred to me that he's made a huge commitment to his craft. Those counterpoint passages - they must, surely?, have to be learned step-by-step? The transitions are so smooth and adept, E9 to C6 and all with faultless intonation and dexterity.

His first LP (you know the one) came with my very first steel over fifty years ago. 'My Funny Valentine' was a Eureka moment!

Doug Jernigan is a force-of-nature.

Doug is so good you get lost in the music and forget the technical stuff he does. I love his jazz playing on C6. Can't get a better player than Doug.

Another fascinating tidbit we typically overlook of Doug Jernigan’s flawless C6 execution is Doug’s ‘footwork’ while playing the back neck. He makes it all appear so simple ( but we know the truth ).

I just tried playing with my ring-finger hooked under the top string.

It's impossible! I can't play anything, much less a fraction of what he can get.

Ron: good point, but he does have that unique 4th pedal. Maybe that's the secret?

Nah. He's just the best of the best.

As if learning, knowing and playing all this wasn’t impressive enough, if I’m not mistaken he was doing this in his stocking feet not wearing shoes…ouch!
I thought Nashville was the roughest, but I know I’ve said the same about them all.
I received my education, drivin through the Nation listenin to Paul!.. ( Franklin that is! )

I don't think it is uncommon to play in socks. I do and so does Travis Toy. Seems to work for him....

Good for anyone who’s able to do that, it seems harder to me and very uncomfortable to my feet personally. But Doug was amazing and inspirational!

If there is any steeler that ever perfected his talent, Doug is at the top of the list.

I know when I first met Doug in the early days of Scotty's, he amazed me.

I am proud to call him my friend.

Heck, on the steel guitar cruise, I even let him eat shrimp off my plate. He ate the same way he picks.
With force. hehe

Thanks for the video. It is a gem
