Samick Jazz Box

Post by Jerry Overstreet »

Samick Archtop. Model #HJ650TR/AV Korean built L5 style. 3 7/8, 17 1/8. I believe it dates to 93 or 94 pre Artist and pre Greg Bennet.

Not your run of the mill Samick Jazz Box. Limited edition, 25 ½ long scale, maple body w/ spruce top, abalone purfling and MOP inlays. Bound maple pickguard.

Gold hardware and Vibrato tailpiece 2 HB pickups.

Ebony or ebonized fingerboard and bridge with thumbwheel adj.

Transparent red/burst. I expect it's all laminated wood except the spruce top.

Economy grade plush lined hard case.

It's the same model Ray Benson had a bunch of artists autograph and then auctioned off for some benefit or western swing promotion if I remember correctly.

I bought it just a few months old in '95, I think, from Guitar Emporium in Louisville.

I hardly play it. Probably hasn't been out more than a dozen times in the last 15 yrs.

Has a good set up with D'Addario CG24 Chromes Jazz Light 11's and plays easy.

Issues are the faded gold on the pickup covers and vibrato and a few light scratches here and there. No digs or gouges.

$1250+ whatever FedEx insured shipping costs to your location.
US Postal money orders, verifiable checks. No paypal. Forum members in conus. PM with interest, questions, etc.

I love Samick jazz boxes!
I have a couple and they are the choice of my guitar player.
I have several major brand guitars but he always picks the Samick. :D

Thanks Erv. They do play and sound nice. A lot of brand name guitars people are playing came out of the Samick factories with their own labels attached. The lion's share of Korean built instruments were Samicks.

Anyway, this one is a pre Greg Bennett era guitar, modeled after the Gibson® L5, I guess the Citation® model. It's a great playing and sounding guitar with a good old time arch top acoustic sound when not plugged in.

Nice guitar with gorgeous appointments.

I used to have one of these. I can vouch for what truly great instruments they are!

I really appreciate your input Paul. I probably should keep it, but I'm headed more toward a pure acoustic experience. Not that this one doesn't have a good acoustic voice. It does, but I'm looking for more of a martinesque D28 type of tone.

I bought the guitar to play in swing and light jazz circles, but all the people in that community that I knew have either passed or moved on, nothing to do so it just sits.

My favorite soldbody of late has been a Samick RL660 - they were making them side-by-side with the high-end Schecters, Epiphones, thoes Guild-ish DeArmonds that were kicking around... Cort is another one who's OWN best work is as good as a Cort by a "name-ier" name. This guy lays out most of the current outsourcers:

New Price

Post by Jerry Overstreet »

I'm reposting this nice Samick guitar. I'm to a point where I'm just barely playing my slab guitars and this just sits in the case in the closet.

Preference given to local/regional meet up sale.

Otherwise: I'll take $1100 plus buyer pays whatever insured FedEx shipping costs to your location. I think this is a fair price for this instrument, but if you feel otherwise, I will listen to serious reasonable offers.

Money orders preferred but will accept cleared personal check. I do not use paypal.

Here is a link to some specs and information on the HJS 650 TRs. This one is not only a TR [translucent red] model but an AV [antique violin sunburst] as well.

Pretty guitar ... I've been in the Samick Factory ... I worked for a company that sold Spruce Sounding Board to them for both Guitars and Grand Piano's ... I took care of all the Bandsaws used for cutting this High Quality Spruce ... We also sold to Martin and Gibson, Steinway, Young Chang, Baldwin before they went out of business and others ... Spent the last 23 years of a 43 year career taking care of Bandsaws in 3 different mills ... Was a good 23 year career there ...
