Any old guys left out there? Fender/Bud help needed to ID Gu

Post by John Davis »

have just gutted this little guitar, cleaned it up and re-rodded it plus changed the set up, has it ever repaid me for the TLC! It rings like a bell, pedal action is soft and light and so very fast, tuning is easy and spot on and I believe it to be a very special one of a kind guitar probably a sales promo item.... I don't know but I'm gonna research it I dont see it as the Fender "Artist" series, maybe they were the dummed down cheaper to produce than this ??
Pics to follow......

That's a very nice looking instrument. I haven't seen a lot of these around.

All Mullen. Great upgrade in parts?

On second look, I believe the mechanics photo is of a Mullen guitar, and not that Fender. Looking at the wood, rails, hardware, etc. I don't believe that photo even goes with the guitar.

If so, that would be a major and expensive modification.

Good catch Kenny.

Don't know Mullen that well, but that tech wasn't around when that Fender was built. I agree, mainly by the "pristine" look of the wood on the underside.

Yeah, that photo must be of a different guitar that got mixed in with the Fender. I didn't notice it at first as the Sho-Bud Super Pro era bell cranks are very similar to Mullen.

That's definitely Mullen underside. Looks like a G2.

No, it's nothing special, just one of the 4,400 "Fender Artist" pedal steels built by Sho~Bud back in the mid '70s. That's a top of the line pro model, but they also built somewhat plainer ones, and a really plain & simple student model. It's something of a cross between the two brands, sounding like a Fender, but playing like a Sho~Bud (thanks to the under-carriage parts). About the only Fender-design parts are the changer, tuning pans, and fretboards.

Its a really decent guitar; all you need, really! 8)

And maybe that badge on the front of the guitar!

I'm betting it's all original Fender/Sho~Bud Artist s-10. Just mistakenly posted a photo of the underside of a different guitar.

yep, Fender Artist S10.. Knife edge changer, pickup, tuner pan, body, all intact... Pull mechanism seriously rebuilt, and looks like an upgrade over the Bud Super Pro pot metal parts that should be there... Probably a great guitar, that I personally would love to own!.... bob

I vote with Jerry. Look closely and you see the two level, bent cross shafts from a G2 Mullen guitar. A very hard upgrade to get the two bearing holes on the same axis. RP
