Thurston Myers

Post by Barbara J. Ferguson »

Thurston Myers, born April 5, 1924, left for his eternal home May 8, 2023. Thurston began playing the steel guitar in the early 40's when a "salesman" from a music store in Hanover, PA came door to door to drum up business for a steel guitar class to be offered at the Fire Hall in Union Bridge, MD. My Dad and his older sister signed up for the class. The class started with 7 students and 6 students finished the 60 lessons. When a second set of 60 lessons were offered, only my Dad and his sister enrolled. My Dad and his sister would play gospel music at church and my Dad continued to practice on his own several times a week. When my Dad was in his 80's, a pastor re-discovered his talent and he was invited to several area churches to play. He continued until his mid 90's when he could no longer feel the strings. In my Dad's last week I found a website with steel guitar gospel music that I played for my Dad. The Steel Guitar Forum was one of the websites he would check daily until August of 2022. His music was a very important part of his life and his witness for Christ. Thank you all for the joy you brought to my Dad! May God Bless you all.

Barbara, thanks for sharing your story. Your dad was a trooper and steel guitarist to the bone. Like many of us, he played until he no longer was able. I plan the same fate. God bless you and your father for the dedication to this wonderful instrument.
