My best guess is some kind of Eastern European zither. Chords at one end, melody strings at the other. I have something similar, and it’s a bear to try and play. Takes palm blocking to a whole different level. Great wall hanger though.

Missed your reply while writing mine Jack. I know what you mean about tuning the thing. Never thought about using a bow. Hmmm. . . .

yes, it's a Ukelin, one of those 20's/30's patent instruments.

This is basically a bowed psaltery with chord strings. You play the melody with a small bow on the side of the instrument while plucking the chord strings.

That's cool - I've also seen people use the bass and chord strings to do more of an oom-pah accompaniment too.
