Tommy Detamore - color me impressed!

Post by Derek Blalock »

Listened to Doug Sahm’s “The Return of Wayne Douglas” all the way through the first time today and - wow! I had to look it up, and I actually haven’t heard of Tommy Detamore before, but from what I heard on this album he seems to belong everywhere up there with all the the other big boys. The songs Beautiful Texas Sunshine and Cowboy Peyton Place had me hitting the rewind button a few times each.

Forgive me if I’m just out of the loop, but I can’t seem to find too much info about him. Anybody know what he’s up to these days and who he’s been playing with if at all?

Maybe Tommy will reply here and tell us of his latest projects, but I know he owns and runs a recording studio in Texas and I think he still plays with Jake Hooker doing regular dance hall shows all over Texas.
Pedal steel, lap steel, resonator, blues harp - why suck at just one instrument when you can do so on many?

I think Tommy is one of the most versatile players around! That album is like a dictionary of great and useful licks. And great touch and tone to boot!

Derek,
I agree completely! Also check out the Jim Lauderdale album This Changes Everything, as Tommy is playing great pedal steel from start to finish. That and the Doug Sahm album you mentioned are two of my favorite pedal steel albums. I probably listen to those two more than anything else because of Tommy’s playing.

Hey Derek, I had the same reaction when I discovered “the other Tommy” on Sunny Sweeney and Pauline Reese recordings years ago. He is world-class, first-rate in every way.

Tommy owns and operates a recording studio and plays steel guitar as one of Jake Hooker's Outsiders. I am surprised that more people are not familiar with his talent. He is one of the absolute best steel guitar players and human beings anywhere. I am proud to count him as a friend. Below is a link to a recording he made with Sunny Sweeney. Enjoy.

The Return of Wayne Douglas is an out standing CD. It just boggles your mind of what Tommy does plus he did the engineering on it. A very talented man. J.R. Rose

I second this. Can't say enough good things about Tommy. He was with Moe Bandy for a long time. There's so much good music that comes from Tommy's Cherry Ridge Recording Studio. He can do it all. I don't think there's any better.

I was 'late to the party', as well. He is an exceptional player and certainly one of the top-ranked TX steel players.

In that state? That's saying something!!

Doug Sahm's “The Return of Wayne Douglas” was also my introduction to Tommy as well as to Doug  Tommy's playing blew me away, thats the way I always wanted to play but never will... There's enough great stuff in just one song on this CD to keep you busy a very long time... AND, Tommy's a Sweet Man too.

I love it when somebody discovers 'The Return of Wayne Douglas' for the first time. Talk about a record with legs, that one sure has 'em. I've been listening to it (and Tommy) for years.

I first met Tommy on a Cory Morrow gig, probably over twenty years ago. He was on steel, and I was playing guitar. For some reason we just clicked, and I'm proud to say we have had a great friendship for many years since (at least from my point of view, Tommy may see it differently LOL, I can be a pest).

I'm so used to being amazed at his talent, it's almost become 'routine' (almost LOL), but better yet, as John Macy said he's a 'world class human being'.

Impeccable playing throughout, with a pair of righteously inventive breaks, in a heckuva song by Robbie Fulks.
