three legged Gibson Console Grande

Post by Erv Niehaus »

I have a three legged Gibson Console Grande that I'll be listing for sale.
Who can tell me when the three legged model was built?
There doesn't seem to be a serial number on it.
Thanks, :D

Dual 8 string or 7 string front neck? Probably 1948… 😎

Mike,
It has one 7 string neck and one 8 string neck.
It had the wobbly legs on it where you inserted the legs and then gave them a 1/4 turn to lock them in place.
I installed leg flanges and screw in legs to make it more stable. :D

From what I've read, the Console Grande had 3 legs in 1948 and 49, then switched to 4.
I have a '48 7/8 that's also been converted to more modern legs. Great guitar!

David,
What tunings do you use on your Console Grande?
I'm going to install new strings on my guitar before I sell it and pondering what tunings to put on it. :D

Mike,
Is that on the 7 string neck or the 8 string neck?

Erv, it's the front 7 string neck.

There is a broken tuning machine on the 8th string on the back neck, in case that might be confusing. :D

Mike,
I'm thinking about an E13 tuning on the 7 string neck and C6th on the bottom neck.
I quite haven't decided if I want G# or E for the top string on the E13th.

Erv E13th on top neck ( seven string ) C6th on bottom ( eight string )...Don Helms wrote once the six top strings on his E13th were about the only ones he used...Don Helms was always my favourite steeler and is still to this day...

David,
If you are a follower of Don Helms, you evidently use G# as the top string, right?

Erv with my steel handy beside me cranked the 7 C# up to D...interesting hmmm..cranked it right back down....Erv a simple yet effective little run pick strings 7 6 5 let them ring and slide down 2 frets..( anywhere on the neck )...then pick string 4 at where ever that may be on many of Hanks old tunes Don incorporated this often a cool drop down...d..
