Videoing yourself

Post by Bill Duncan »

My 13 year old daughter videoed me the other day. She rarely comes up to my studio and I like her company but the video I can do without. I don't mind recordings, but the facial expressions I make while playing are not meant for video. Also, the wrinkles and white beard are terrible too.

I may put up a sign "no phones allowed" in my studio.

Hah! I'm sure it's not as bad as you think Bill. I'm pretty self conscious myself about videos. My wife was always doing that while I was practicing, until I turned the tables on her when she was. Solved that. We get videoed from other folks while we perform in public, but that's uncontrollable and doesn't bother either one of us at all.Im sure youve noticed, most of the self videos you see out there only show the hands and guitar. It's the music that counts!😉

yes I've made it a rule to crop my face out of any videos I make, for the benefit of the viewer :\

Pretty rare that I get my mug in any of the videos I do... I figure if most steel players are ANYTHING like me, it's my hands and feet they're interested in. Hence the over the shoulder POV shot where the frets and pedals I'm on are visible... Most everything beyond that seem to me to be a distraction.

Get a lovely model to stand next to your steel and nobody will notice the playing. That's how the Hollywood folks handle it. Lol

Everybody always told me to "smile"...I have an inherited German jaw..I call it..just like my dad...frick & frack...known as the ol frowning b**** face....it's how my teeth align with jaw fully closed...but back to the subject..Can't bare to look at vids..let alone hear them...but hey...we love our music ,playing,it's what's in your heart that counts...

Video/Camera Shy

Post by Carl Williams »

Well, some of us have a great face for radio…😉. The Big E and Jeff Newman seemed to always have a smile and almost laughing while playing the daylights out of the instrument…having fun 👍. On the other hand/face, if you’ve been told you look like you’re either hurt in’, constipated, or look like a baboon drinking vinegar….that could dampen your spirits of being on video! 🤔😉😀
