Very sad, and I truly think the end of an era. In an age now where authenticity is as rare as hens' teeth, Loretta was as authentic as American music gets.

Oh man, she was amazing—and hip to the end.
She recorded this when she was, I believe, 84 years old (young) in 2016.

I play this song often—-it just cracks me up. Pure country with the best play on words.
And backed up by Elvis Costello. With great steel too. What a hip country gal. RIP.

All of us true country fans have lost one of the best singers, song writer, and entertainers ever. On top of that, I've never heard anything about her other than," What a sweet person she is." She was and will always be one of my favorites. RIP Loretta.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Loretta always had a pedal steel in her band during the years she toured.
Can someone help me with the list of steel players?
I know it was Bob Hempker for many years, and probably Heuy on the Conway/Loretta duets.

I thought I remembered someone telling me at one of the early 1990 jams in the Seattle area that one of the Seattle players was with here for a short time when she was starting out. I have a photo in which the caption says "Loretta in Washington state with her first band, the Trail Blazers in 1959. Steel man has the name Smiley written on his steel.

It would be interesting to know of the others that worked with her. John did tell me that he played on the duets with Conway, Hal Rugg on most of the studio cuts of hers. I believe it might have been Don Helms on some of her early cuts but don't think he toured with her.I always envied Bob Hempker for having that great gig. He has been one of my favorite players for a very long time. My thoughts are with Bob as I know how much she meant to him.

Smiley might have been Smiley Roberts. Don't know if he worked with her or not.

Not sure Richard, but I don't think that it was Smiley Roberts. Here is the photo from the book. Probably hard to see with the bad quality. But caption says 1959 in Seattle. She mentions in her book "Coal Miner's Daughter" that she used local pickup bands in the early days. But this photo here is interesting as it is 'Loretta and the Trailblazers'.

So very sad and sorry to read this.
She was one of the best IMHO and as
we say in the south "country to the bone"
Not like some of the fake ones out there today.
She will be missed by many fans.

My brother Harold Fogle played an Emmons with a blue Formica finish while in her band. He was in her band during the late sixties and into the seventies.
