Mike McGee interview

Post by Larry King »

As I read my notes on Mike, I realize that this is a humble
man and as such , he downplayed or omitted some of his best
accomplishments...so , {ha ha} I'll fix that. With an impre-
sive resume, his first decent guitar was a Silvertone 6 str,
bought for Christmas in '64

From beginning in '74 with his first introduction to pedal
steel , within one year , 1975, he was working in a band
that backed up folks like Johnny Russell ,Mel Street ,
Jerry Wallace , Nat Stuckey, and Bob Luman. Again, he had
only been on steel one year and then was with Stan Hitchcock
for 3 yrs and then did a 3 yr stint as staff steel player
at the Hee Haw Theater in Branson where he met the entire
crew of Hee Haw.....Archie Campbell , Gordy Tapp , and of
course, the Honeys..nurse Goodbody , Gunilla Hutton and
all the rest.

Mike spent 28 productive years in the work-a-day world
with Farm Credit and Dairy Farmers of America . Since
retiring he and Mary are raising Beef cattle. Now as I
promised , here's some of the omissions . We'll start
with a young man named Jacob King. Mike taught and mentored
Jacob to a level that he's able to take a job with a band
in Springfield with Travis Scott Clevinger , a monster
singer.

If that weren't enough, Mike's willingness to help local
and regional Steel Guitar clubs is a blessing. Wherever
he's needed , he'll be there , playing electric or acoustic
guitar in the staff band . A very hard worker and an absolutely

fine Christian man, a virtue you'll notice just being in his
presence. Mike plays a ZUM double 10 and is proficient on either
neck. Come see him ply his craft at the OSGA Convention June 24
and 25 in Jenks Ok , a Tulsa suburb . The show will be held at
St James Presbyterian Church's Fellowship Hall , a tobacco free
alcohol free venue

b0b notes: Mike McGee will be performing at the OSGA show in Jenk, OK, on June 24, 2022.

Mike is tops and one of my steel guitar heroes. His command of both necks and tone will leave you breathless. He is blessed with a magic touch that makes you sit on the edge of your seat. I'm always happy to see Mike's name on the players list.

Mike is a great player and a wonderful person. Met him quite a few years ago at Baxter Springs.

I really like Mike because he knows my first name. Always great to get the chance to hear him play.

Thank you so much, brother Larry, for taking the time to explain to everyone why I am both crazy AND broke! Love you and all my dear steel guitar friends so much! It has been a great music trip that has lasted 59 years. See you all in Tulsa!!!

I have known Mike McGee since 1977. He is a Super Steel Guitarist and knows more Music Theory than probably Webster's Dictionary. I love to listen to him play Curly Chalker and Emmons Steel Guitar licks. He's a Master Teacher. He's a Christian Brother and I'm Honored to be Friends with him too.
