This is vague but I’m just trying to figure it out. All good guesses are welcome!
Early 70s black male singer. In the intro he kinda sings along with the guitar intro. The song also has quite a few catchy high notes. Not at all a country song. I do know the singer is no longer living and I seem to recall he was a chauffeur before his song became a regional hit in California.
Again I know wayyyyy vague but any guesses throw em out there.

George was a well known jazz player before he joined CTI records. In fact he played with Miles in the mid 60’s. He was not unknown nor was he a chauffeur.

Mickey Baker of Mickey and Sylvia had Love is Strange. I wouldn't call him a one hit wonder, but that's the only charting song of his I could name. Any other clues like style?
If this was a California guitarist who just happened to record a song it might be easier to track him down by his guitar work.

Our OP seems to have left the room. I guess he is still wondering, or wandering. Not sure which.

Never heard the song or the artist, but apparently this song was used in Breaking Bad, first season, episode 4.
