This weekend I used contact cleaner to eliminate scratchy pot sounds in my open-backed Peavey Backstage amps. Removed the electronics and later reassembled. Easy!
I also have a pair of Peavey KB amps. They do not have open backs.
How do get to the back of the pots? |

Pull the amp chassis out of the amp. Disconnect the speaker wires from the speaker and remove the screws under the metal chassis straps on top. Not sure on KB amps if they slide out the front as most amps slide out of the rear. Is the back removable? I lay most amps on there side to avoid the weight of the chassis causing issues. A little careful work should reveal the answer. Be sure you use a cleaner that is made for pots. Cheap cleaners will wash the lubricant away and the pot will wear out quickly. |

Well that's a good question. My Fender Twins and Bassman amps, 4 in total, are still stock from the 70s. I have cleared pots on newer amps and preamps that do OK but some were soon bad again and I replaced them. So I will say it's a 50/50 split. I used the old Radio Shack tuner cleaner with lube. Still available online but Caig makes some products that are dedicated to this. Their D5S-6 should be fine. |

Incidentally the CRC QD product you listed is OK for cleaning but should be followed with a fader lube. There have been reports of pots sized up by just using a cleaner and no lube. I worked on a Fender Master Volume pull pot that was sized and no replacement available. Disassemble the pot and heated the shaft to get it apart and free. What a pain. |
