The funniest thing I've heard is "the knitting machine"
That still makes me smile!

One band leader I worked with, affectionatly called my steel "The wailing plank" Another gig I was playing at, and a well dressed lady in the "front row" came up to me in the break and asked "Is that a kind of piano?" Now fellow forumites, does it look like it has piano keys!!!!!!

About 20 years ago I was playing a club out in the San Fernando Valley. On this gig I was playing keys and Dan Dugmore was on steel. On a break this older guy....fairly soused...comes up to me and says, "Boy, you play a mean steel guitar."
I just figured he had me and Dan mixed up...we sorta would look alike if you'd had a few. I told him thanks, but I'm the keyboard player, pointing to my Yamaha KX88 on the end of the stage. And, pointing to Dan's blonde Stringmaster on the other end of the stage, I said "That's the steel guitar."
He said, "Uh uh," and pointing back to my KX88 said, "In my day that was a steel guitar!"
Now figure that one out.....
