Problem playing track through a PA

Post by Frank Freniere »

Have an issue playing a BIAB song from my iPhone into a PA system.

I made a BIAB song with RealTracks, not MIDI, a few years ago using the 2017 Windows version. I don't remember how I did it but I dropped a mandolin solo from RealBand into it & it sounded pretty cool. So I saved it to my old iPhone6 & from time time I'd play along with the song using a bluetooth speaker.

Fast-forward to 2021, I decide to start bringing some backing tracks to an open mic just to be able to do my own thing, & see what it sounds like in a live situation. So I connect the iPhone 6 to the PA system using a Stereo Interconnect Cable - 3.5mm TRS Male to 1/4-inch TRS Male - 10 foot. The track plays fine but there is no mando solo coming through the PA!

Is there a stereo/mono mismatch somewhere in the chain? Is it a BIAB issue? An iPhone issue? A PA issue?

Thoughts?

The PA input is typically mono. If so, It's not seeing either the tip or ring of the TRS. I'd venture a guess that the ring is shorted to the sleeve when inserted.

The usual fix is to go to a 1/4 inch TS instead of a TRS.

Inexpensive to try.

Thanks, Howard - I'll give it a shot next time I'm out.

That makes perfect sense. I will be surprised if you are not right.
