Guyatone (Fender Deluxe 8 copy) pickup question

Post by Jan Oelbrandt »

I recently picked up this (? 60ies) Guyatone 8-string console. The thing seems to be well built, stays in tune, etc etc but the pickups don't sound good. I have other 8st pups laying around, so I'd wanna try some in there. But... I can't figure out how they're attached to the body. Could it be they're glued in there? There's not a screw to be seen. Nothing on the underside too. I've tried gently with a screwdriver to flip'em out, nothing's moving. Posting here in case somebody has previous experiences. Help me out here before I break something ;-)

No experience with these but perhaps the claw is screwed in place and the bobbin glued into it?

Tagged for interest as my double neck Guy has the same pickups.

I removed these pickups years ago. I believe they were screwed down. There are two screws on the bottom of the jagged "claw" . to get to them the black cover comes off. I believe it just lifts off. Then the bobbin comes off. It may be glued but comes up easy...at least i was able to do it. Then you can access the screws and take the claw off.

I recently restored one of these for a forum member. The claw screws down into the body but the pickups just sit inside the claw and then the cover goes over top and holds everything in there. Yours are probably “glued” “stuck” from years of gunk and just need to be gently loosened and removed. Try and clean any gunk away in the seem between the cover and the claw and they should pull up. You can’t really break it so don’t worry about it. Let me know if you need more help.

Here’s a picture of the repro bobbin I made for the guitar. This is to show how it all goes together. I wax potted the pickup w the cover on so it’s all stuck together and then it just sits inside the claw. You could use some foam double sided tape on the bottom of the bobbin if needed or melt some wax inside the cover and then stick the bobbin inside and it will hold.

Here's some photos of the removal of one PU, and installation of a new one (actually a Fender Jazz Bass pu). The oddest thing about the original pu is that the magnets just sit loosely in there. After removal of the cover I just could take them out one by one. Hi-res versions available if somebody needs them.

I did have it public for a week or so then took it down again along with all my other content, You Tube wants to put adverts on my Channel and Tax me at source, I won't allow that, sorry.

I saw it, thanks. That's a really nice tune to play on a steel guitar.
