Apologies if this has been addressed before. I have a Goodrich volume pedal that has two issues.
It goes from "off" to "on" with no gradation, meaning there's no fading in.
It also has an uneven sweep, by which I mean that the volume barely increases at the beginning of a upwards volume sweep, then suddenly jumps up.
I'm thinking it must be a pot issue, since there's not really much else there, but I'm not sure if it's an issue I can fix or if I just need to get a new pot.
Thanks! |

Has it always behaved this way, or did it just start acting up?
It sounds like it has a pot in it with the wrong taper.

I haven't used it in a long time, but I remember it always having an issue. What's the best source for a 500k pot? |

Thanks Erv!
And thanks Kevin! I looked there, but it seems like a lot to drop on volume pots. If I had to go that route, it might be worth it to just buy a Hilton. |

The Tom Bradshaw pots are OK. Not great if you are used to the original Allen Bradley pots but are a good compromise.
I have a Goodrich 120 and the original Clarostat pot went bad after at least 25 years (it wasn't used much after I got a Hilton). It had been used at home with a second steel. I got one of the Bradshaw pots and it was OK but I missed the old AB and early Clarostat branded that were really AB's with the modified audio (logarithmic) taper. I found an old AB pot in my junk box and it looked OK with an ohmmeter so I put it in the Goodrich and its working OK. I don't use the Goodrich its just a backup in case its needed. I now have a Telonics pedal and one of the modes (the one I use) emulates the old AB modified analog taper. High price to pay to get the old AB taper but worth it. |

You might check the string to determine if it is slipping and not moving the pot shaft smoothly, also check for a loose pulley. |

Thanks so much everyone. I think the string is ok but I'll futz around some more. This has got me thinking that I should considering investing in a Telonics or a Hilton. |

Give the Goodrich Omni pedal some consideration.

I'm a Hilton fan because I like anything that's maintenance-free. Some people like the feel of a pot pedal, but to me it's just the feeling of it wearing out under your foot.
I also have a Telonics which has an amazingly transparent sound, possibly better even than the Hilton, but at the price it is it darn well should have. It has a mass of clever features which I shall never use. It's nice to have, but I would never urge anybody to spend that sort of money. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Ian,
I'm with you.
I tried a Telonics next to a Hilton and it wasn't worth the extra money.

Over the last 10 years I bought tried sold the hilton ,the telonics and some other light beam pedals and went back to the passive pot pedals , that telonics was anodized aluminum , (silver) bought it new , that was one good looking pedal , ,
All the passive pedals I bought ,I replaced the old pots with the little black dunlop pots and was happy with them ,

I haven't bought a new pot IN the last 30 years, I rebuilt OMITE,Allen Bradley, and clarostate pots. I have four volume pedals, all with rebuilt pots. You can rebuild the pots if the resistance track is still good. All you need to do is replace the little brush that rotates ON the resistanCE track. The brush is made of carbon like used in electric motors. I have a post explaining how this is done if you can find it. These rebuilt pots usually lasts longer than Some new ones. Because the new brushes are larger than the original brush. |

I take my hat off to you, Willie Sims. I would always rather mend something good than throw it away and replace it with something new but not as good quality.
Unfortunately as time goes by things get tougher to dismantle as they're designed to be junked, not serviced. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!
