Ray at the steel was part of the show at one point. I asked Buddy how much steel did Ray play, to which he answered, "Just enough to get a laugh and a little applause for trying."

Donny, It might be. Could be the wagon guitar.

Note: The lack of knee levers...
My best,
Ernie

I'm not surprised by no levers.

The first steel I had was a very good knock-off of a Permanent D10. It had one lever (lower 2&8 on the E9) which was clearly a later addition, so there was a time when they were built with just the eight pedals.

Ray on the nsteel

Post by Martin Yeomans »

When I was stationed at Minot AFB way up in freezing North Dakota, Ray brought his Cherokee Cowboys twice for show in a high school auditorium, was 1964 and 1965 during the winters. Both shows included a bit where Buddy stood up to sing a tune, and Ray sat at his steel and made some horrible noises, just dragging the bar up and down the neck, while Buddy tried to sing. The crowd laughed quite a bit at this act. Actually, seeing and hearing Buddy play those shows was my first thought of laying down the old Tele and trying to learn the steel. So glad to have had that experience.

Drummer in the above photo is Johnny Bush, though he's obscured by Buddy.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

After looking at the pictures again, Its obvious that those are two different guitars. The picture on top features a guitar with a STEREO decal. The guitar in the second picture does not have STEREO in the decal.
Based on that, FWIW, I believe the guitar in the first picture is # 2, and the guitar in the second pic may very well be the "Wagon", which according to Buddy was a '65.
