I recently got a Vorson 8-string Lap steel and I am waiting for my Line6 Pod HD500X to arrive. If any of you use this device with your Lap Steels, what settings do you like to use for different sounds? Your advice would be appreciated - thanks. |

I’ve been using an HD 500x with my Stringmaster Dual 6 in a Yes Tribute Band I play in. You won’t find any presets they have designed that are usable, they are mostly over distorted Exagerated effect presets for beginners. You will have to build your own sound. I tend to just use my 500x as an effects unit, I don’t like amp modeling much. Your mileage may very. The learning curve is slightly steep but go into it knowing the outcome is very usable In A live situation. I Use an Ampeg 100 watt 15” combo and it gets a great steel sound. |

I have migrated to the Helix at this point but still have my HD500x. I use my modelers for the studio sessions I play. Oh, and by the way, I am an engineer/producer by trade. The preset I used mostly for a clean lap steel sound was a Fender Blackface Deluxe model with a Fender Twin 2x12 open cab. I add my own "special sauce," if you will. I put a compressor at the front for these reasons:
1. the amp models tend to be a little stiff for me
2. it simulates the power amp compression with low or medium gain that I prefer
3. I want a little control over my right-hand work because I am a left-hander playing right handed. For that matter,
4. I can use the gain makeup to push the front end of the amp to "cook" it, bringing out the bloom of overtones without undue distortion.
I place both my echo and reverb post speaker cab to keep them clean. Between the speaker and the effects I throw in an EQ to add some midrange because the models seem a bit pinched in the mids.
If I want more drive such as you'd expect from David Gilmour, I simply push up the gain on the patch until it drives. More? I had a copy of that patch where I simply replaced the Deluxe Reverb with a '70s Marshall 50 Watt Plexi. I liked the smooth distortion they put out and I like the smoothness of open-back cabs. I simply adjust a few parameters so that it sounds the way I want.
Obviously, I like '70s sounds! My Helix models are simply expansions of these same sounds.
So, there you go! I hope that helps a bit. I did a LOT of sessions on my HD500X and never got a complaint about he tone.
